听力原文:M: Whew. The disco wasn't bad but I'm glad to escape from the noise. Aren't you?

W: Ummmmm.

M: Mary, I'd forgotten. You've got a letter. Now where did I put it? There it is. Under the gas bill.

W: Oh, from my brother.

M: Good. How many brothers have you got?

W: Only one.

M: Name?

W: Mark.

M: Older or younger?

W: Much older.

M: How much?

W: Five years.

M: Get on all right?

W: Yes, all right.

M: Tell me about Mark. You must have a lot in common. Such as problems.

W: Well, when I have a real problem I usually discuss it with Mark.

M: And what is a real problem?

W: Money is one. But Mark never minds helping me out.

M: You say money is one problem. I suppose you mean there are others.

W. Well, yes. Of course there are. Friends and possessions. He knows who my friends are and I know who his friends are. But when we meet we hardly ever speak. His friends aren't interested in talking to my friends. And my friends think his friends are boring and patronising.

M: Go on, Mary. You mentioned possessions. What about possessions?

W: I can never find my favorite cassettes. Mark and his friends keep borrowing them. I suppose Mark has a point when he says be can't find his calculator. I use it whenever I can find it.

M: So...if you were in real trouble, who would you con- tact first?

W: Mark, of course.

听力原文: (32) How men first learnt to invent words is unknown, in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, (33) somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feel hugs, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other, and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken, or written in letters we call words. (34) The power of words, then, lies in their associations--the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience, and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past, and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literery style. Above all, (35) the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by then position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.

(33)

A.A legend handed down from the past.

B.A matter that is hidden or secret.

C.A question difficult to answer.

D.A problem not yet solved.

听力原文: In preparing a book, I asked several successful executives to tell me what they thought students should study if they wanted to succeed in business. They listed only a few technical subjects accounting and finance, for example. But time and again, these executives identified philosophy as one of the most important areas you can study for learning how to think in a disciplined, analytical, and imaginative way.

The way that philosophy helps you see the world is no less real than its practical benefits to your career. Studying philosophy exposes you to a wide range of problems that you wouldn't meet otherwise. It simply lets you see more of the world. It stretches your imagination. It challenges you to come up with your own answers to tough issues that do not have ready-made solutions.

Studying philosophy helps you to develop insight into some of life's great puzzles and to fashion your own vision of what life is all about. As you go through life, you will be challenged all along the way to make decisions about who you are and what's important to you. Philosophy helps you develop a sense of what life is all about and where you're going.

In fact, Socrates, one of the first great philosophers, thought that philosophy is the single most important element in making our lives worthwhile. "The unexamined life," he said, "is not worth living." In Socrates' mind, at least, philosophy makes it possible for us to control our own destiny.

听力原文:M: Good morning, Dr. Smith. My name is Peter. I am a freshman in your department.
There are a few things that I am not quite sure of and I do need your advice.

W: Thank you very much for your trust, Peter. As your academic advisor I will try my best to help you.

M: Thanks. It's about my major...

W: Well, what's the matter?

M: I used to major in English, but now I have made up my mind to switch to Applied Linguistics, concentrating on Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

W: So you want to switch majors?

M: Yes. But I wonder if it is possible.

W: Well, usually we allow it, as long as you have enough credits.

M: That's good news for me. I'm not interested in literature and that sort of thing. I want to be a real teacher, Professor. But I'm worried about the make-up credits.

W: You usually do have to make up some credits when you switch majors. Are you OK on credits?

M: Not too many. I'll have to add about 12 credits as far as I can. figure from my transcript. Would you please let me know how many credits are required to get a master's degree?

W: Usually thirty-six credits are needed, ff you take five courses per term, you'll have enough credits after just two semesters. Usually each course is worth three credits. To get the six remaining credits you either prepare a thesis or take two more courses.

M: Is there anything else besides the 36 credits for the master's?

W: You have to have an oral defense.

M: I see.I really appreciate your help,Professor.

W: Glad I can help.Good luck.Peter.
