听力原文:W: Hello, listeners! Welcome to our program. Our today's guest is Dr. Howard Mill
er. Dr. Miller is a professor of Sociology at Washington University and has written numerous articles and books on the issues facing older Americans in our graying society for the past 15 years.

M: Thank you for that introduction.

W: Well, Dr. Miller, as a matter of fact, there are many issues facing aged people. Can you say something about those?

M: Well, first, I want to share a story of my own life. Several years ago when my grandparents were well into their eighties, they were faced with the reality of no longer being able to adequately care for them.

W: Yeah, that is quite a common and natural problem with aged people.

M: My grandfather spoke of his greatest fear, that of leaving the only home they had known for the past 60 years. The prospect of having to sell their home, giving up their independence and moving into a retirement home was an extremely depressing experience for them.

W: That's definitely sure.

M: He was quite sad, exclaiming that he felt he wasn't important anymore.

W: Yeah, that's a quite natural feeling.

M: For them and some older Americans, this period of their lives means the decline of not only one's health but the loss of identity and serf-worth. In many societies, this serf-identity is closely related with our social status, occupation, material possessions, or independence.

W: So is there any way to help the elderly reestablish their serf-identity?

M: Well, I think it is important to find some meaningful roles the elderly can and should play in our societies. By doing something for the society, they will feel they are still useful and important.

(23)

A.The growing crisis of inadequate retirement pensions for the future.

B.The problem of providing adequate medical care for the elderly.

C.An emotional problem facing the elderly and how to overcome it.

D.Helping the elder lead a life in retirement homes.

听力原文:M: As a teacher, can you give us some idea on how the English school system works

W: First of all, most children start school at the age of five and they can't leave school until the age of sixteen. But now we have a new system where children aren't divided off at the age of eleven, instead, they could take the exams at the age of sixteen.

M: Do you think that's an improvement to the system?

W: Well ,it's supposed to be much better because it stops separating children at the age of eleven and gives them a better chance. In fact, what usually happens is that those children who would have gone to a grammar school tend to be at the top end of the comprehensive system and those that would have gone to secondary modern school find themselves at lower levels of the school.

M: Do you think that the present school system is an efficient way of educating children?

W: Of course one of our great problems in England is that we have very large classes and it would be very nice if we could reduce them by at least half.

M: Do you think the subjects that children study are adapted to present-day society?

W: It would be very good if more children at school had the opportunity of learning about the society they live in economic terms and in social terms. So that they are much more aware of the problems that we face today.

(23)

A.Those who were at the age of 16.

B.Those who failed the eleven plus exam.

C.Those who did well in the eleven plus exam.

D.Those who were not qualified for secondary school.

听力原文:M: Good evening, dear audience. I'm glad to continue the topic about music. It is
common knowledge that music can have a powerful effect on our emotion. In fact, since 1930s, music therapists have relied on music to soothe patients and help control pain. Now psychologists are confirming that music can also help relieve depression and improve concentration.

W: That's nice. Do they have any concrete examples?

M: For instance, in a recent study, 15 surgeons were given some highly stressed math problems to solve. They were divided into three groups: one worked in silence; and in another, the surgeons listened to music of their choice on headphones; the third listened to classic music chosen by the researchers.

W: What're the results?

M: The results of the study may surprise you. The doctors who got to choose their music experienced less stress and scored better than the others.

W: That is surprising. How to explain this?

M: One possible explanation is that listening to music you tike stimulates the Alfa-wave in the brain, increases the heart rate and expands the breathing. That helps to reduce stress and sharpen concentration.

W: Is there any other research?

M: Yes. Other research suggests a second relation between the music and the brain; by examining the student's blood after listening to a variety of classical music collections, the researchers found that some students showed a large increase in a chemical substance, a natural pain reliever, in their blood, which can held soothe the patient.

W: Well, thank you so much for being with us today and having us know about another function of music.

(23)

A.Training given to music therapists.

B.How music prevents disease.

C.Studies on the benefits of music.

D.How musicians create music.

听力原文:M: Hello and welcome to today's show, Shirley's Garden. Today, we'll be interview
ing Shirley on her amazing techniques at growing a garden. Thank you for being here, Shirley.

W: You're welcome.

M: Shirley, you truly have an amazing garden. Can you tell tm how you learned about gardening?

W: Well, this spring I took a gardening class. Then I decided to try some of the things I had learned. So I have tried various attempts at gardening and with different degrees of success.

M: From the pictures of your garden, I've seen 'all kinds of different vegetables, including cucumbers, tomatoes, straw berries, carrots and so on. Could you let us know how you put these plants together in your garden?

W: Well, one of the most important things in gardening is that you choose a good location. You need at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunshine. Um, you also need to choose a location that has good drainage, and it should be a convenient location. After choosing a good location, I just decided what I wanted to plant, and based on what the final plant would took like, I divided the whole garden into different parts.

M: Shirley, I've noticed some vertical beams in your garden. I'm truly amazed by them. Could you explain that to us a little bit?

W: Well, take cucumbers for instance. Cucumbers take a lot of space when you grow them out on the ground, but I don't have that much space. So I just grow them up. Just grow them vertically. I just used a metal frame. and some strings to allow them to grow up, and they will support themselves.

M: Well, Shirley, this is truly amazing. Thank you very much for being with us today.

W: My pleasure.

(23)

A.The pleasure derived from gardening.

B.How to grow an amazing garden.
