Much has been said about the iPod and its amazing popularity with people of all ages and g
roups. The iPod phenomenon has also taken many by surprise as industry-watchers thought that the greatly designed but expensive iPod would be beaten by cheaper knockoffs like those from Dell. Strangely enough the iPod phenomenon shows no signs of abating (减少). In classical Apple style, the iPod mania is set to become another chapter in business studies.

Looking back on the transition of individualized music listening from the LPs to current digital files, we see that the technology of today has made music listening not only easy but also a more personalized affair.

Today's music-buying public is a different breed. A survey of the U.K.'s music-buying public has revealed that "sound quality" is our biggest priority when it comes to choosing how we listen to our favorite artists. Seventy-five percent of 800 people questioned said that sound quality was most important to them, whilst a third enjoy high quality music in the home but are less fussy when on the move. Commissioned by Sony, Philips and Universal Music, the survey focuses on people's music listening habits and tastes.

Whilst one out of every five consumers questioned admitted they found it difficult to tell the difference between sound qualities, an overwhelming 80% of those said that sound quality is important to them. They like their music "to be crystal-clear, free from noise and interference". The iPod has epitomized sound quality in the adoption of the next generation music compression format called AAC that provides small enough files for portability but also provides crystal-clear playback properties. "Crystal-clear music, free from noise and interference" is as much a property of the player as that of the format, and this is where the iPod scores above the rest, in providing a great form. factor with pristine engineering at a cost that most people would not dare put their players to rough use.

Another major factor for the popularity of the iPod is that it perfectly complements the behavior. of people as far as music Consumption is concerned. Until the advent of the iPod, listening to music on the go was a cumbersome (不方便的) experience, one that entailed carrying around expensive CDs or audio cassettes, the use of which did not give people a music experience that was "crystal-clear, free from noise and interference". The iPod changed all that. Anyone can transport their entire music library with them and envelop themselves in a very personalized music experience and more importantly make an instant selection that matches their mood.

This explains how the iPod has become a "cultural phenomenon" and hopefully will remain one for a long time. It has essentially changed the way we experience music in our everyday lives.

What can be learned about today's music-buying public?

A.They are less fussy when listening to music on the go.

B.They are the first individualized music listeners.

C.They give first priority to sound quality.

D.They specialize in distinguishing sound quality.

听力原文: The crowd cheered and cheered. The man with the horn waved and smiled his great, happy smile. "More! More!" cried the crowd. And Louis Satchmo Armstrong took his horn and began to play again. Here he was in England. Now as a famous man, he was rich. He knew many important people. Wherever he went, people knew his name. They wanted to hear his music. As Louis played the sad, slow songs, he thought of his home in New Orleans. He lived there as a boy. How many years ago was it? It was a busy, exciting city. But Louis' family was very poor. He went to work to help his mother. He also went to school. One of Louis' teachers asked him to be in the school band. "This horn is yours until you leave our school," his teacher said. Louis' music was jazz and he loved it. He remembered all the music he heard. He didn't learn to read music until he was a man. When he left school, he played in many bands. He loved his work and people loved him. They knew that he had a wonderful talent. Louis played in little towns and in big cities. Satchmo's horn had as many sounds as ten horns--sometimes slow and sweet; sometimes fast and hot, high and low. His music was always strong and exciting.

Passage Two:Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. It has been thought and
said that Africans are born with musical talent. Because music is so important in the lives of many Africans and because so much music is performed in Africa, we are inclined to think that Africans are musicians. The impression is strengthened when we look at ourselves and find that we have become largely a society of musical spectators (旁观). Music is important to us, but most of us can be considered consumers rather than producers of music. We have records, television, concerts, and radio to fulfill many of our musical needs. In most situations where music is performed in our culture it is not difficult to distinguish the audience from the performers, but such is often not the case in Africa. Alban Ayipaga, a Kasena semiprofessional musician from northern Ghana, says that when his flute (长笛) and drum ensemble (歌舞团) is performing. “Anybody can take part”. This is true, but Kasena musicians recognize that not all people are equally capable of taking part in the music. Some can sing along with the drummers, but relatively few can drum and even fewer can play the flute along with the ensemble. It is fairly common in Africa for there to be an ensemble of expert musicians surrounded by others who join in by clapping, singing, or somehow adding to the totality of musical sound. Performances often take place in an open area (that is, not on a stage) and so the lines between the performing nucleus and the additional performers, active spectators, and passive spectators may be difficult to draw from our point of view.

第26题:The difference between us and Africans, as far as music is concerned, is that ________.

A) most of us are consumers while most of them are producers of music

B) we are musical performers and they are semiprofessional musicians

C) most of us are passive spectators while they are active spectators

D) we are the audience and they are the additional performers

第10题
Music is the result of thought in the form. of attitude. There is no one way of thinking,
since men's values are as scattered and dissimilar as individual men themselves. If black music can be seen as the result of certain attitudes, certain specific ways of thinking about the world, then my basic hypothesis about music is understood. The black man's music changed as the changed, reflecting shifting attitudes or consistent attitudes within changing contexts. It is why the music changing seems most important to me.

When jazz first began to appear on the American scene during the twenties, in one form. or another, it was introduced in many instances by white Americans. Yet its original conception and its most vital development were the result of certain attitudes, or experiential ideas, attributable to the Afro-American culture. Jazz as played by white musicians was not the same as that played by black musicians nor was there any reason for it to be. The music of the white jazz musician was, at its most profound, a learned art.

The blues, for example, which I take to be an independent black music, was practically ignored in pre-jazz white American culture. Blues is an extremely important part of jazz. However, the way in which jazz utilizes the blues "attitude" provided a musical analogy the white musician could understand, and thus he could arrive at a style. of jazz music. The white musician understood the blues first as music, but seldom as an attitude, since the attitude of the white musician was necessarily quite a different one. And in many cases, it was not consistent with the making of jazz.

Thus, the trumpets(小号)of Bix Beiderbecke and Louis Armstrong were very dissimilar. The white middle- class boy from Iowa was an inborn intellectual and had an emotional life that was based on his conscious or unconscious disapproval of most of the custom of his culture. On the other hand, Armstrong was, in terms of an emotional model, an honored priest of his culture. He was not rebelling against anything with his music. The incredible irony of the situation was that both stood in similar places in the superstructure of American society: Beiderbecke, because of his isolation and departure from mass culture; and Armstrong, because of the socio-historical separation of the black man from the rest of American.

Which of the following best states the underlying idea of the passage?

A.Due to the environmental influences, the music of black and white artists must be very different.

B.Due to its result of thought, black artists' music can be learned by white musicians.

C.Because jazz is created on inspiration, it is difficult for musicians to copy each other.

D.Because music has social significance, its influence on black white relations should not be underestimated.
