听力原文:Hollywood, a suburb of the city of Los Angeles in California, is situated between
a range of mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Until 1908 it was no more than a quiet village on the northern side of the city, but in that year William Selig, one of the first people to make films, set up a film-producing workshop in Los Angeles. By 1911, in Hollywood, and at about the same time oil was discovered in the neighborhood. Thus Hollywood quickly became a big district given over to the film industry and to oil wells.

The early film makers found Hollywood a suitable place for their work because of its clear, sunny, rain free weather, which allowed pictures to be taken all the year round. Also, it was known that every kind of scene needed for films, whether town, country, sea, desert or snow-capped mountains, could be found within the area of California. Nowadays, when some films can be "shot" under cover by man-made lighting, these advantages are not so important.

At present, Hollywood remains a center of film production although nowadays making more films for television than for the cinema. There, or in Beverly Hills nearby, are to be seen the houses of the "stars" and producers famous all over the world.

听力原文: Nowadays there are more and more ways of going on holiday. More and more people go abroad every year. Some people even go on two or three holidays a year.

In my opinion, there are two types of holidaymakers. The first kind of holidaymakers always flocks to seaside resorts when they go on holiday. Their one and only aim is to have a good time by sunbathing and putting their feet up. They are not a hit interested in local specialties. At mealtimes, if they can get a plate of British "fish and chips", they're more than happy! They spend their days in the sunshine and their evenings getting drunk, then sleep soundly. If this sort of person forgets to pack the suntan oil, he or she will Undoubtedly come home as red as a lobster.

The other sort of holidaymakers goes to every country to increase their knowledge of foreign lands. They make use of the chance to travel to improve their world knowledge. For them, going on holiday is educational. Consequently, this sort of travelers will move from place to place every few days. If they visit lots of places in a short span of time, there is no way that they can get a proper feel of a place or fully appreciate the local food and wine.

Whichever type of holiday chosen, everybody has the same aim: to put their work to the back of their minds, have as much fun as possible and come home happy and relaxed.

听力原文: What will man be like in the future--in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now.'? We can only make a guess, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today. For man is slowly changing all the time. Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time, so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain's capacity. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more--and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too: the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger. Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man's eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modem life.

听力原文: Laid-off workers are still the focus of China's unemployment problem.

Wang Yadong, a senior official at the Ministry of Labor and Social Security said the year will conclude the government's three-year policy of actively promoting employment. The plan was adopted in 2002 to provide subsidies and job opportunities for laid-off workers. He said that a system of unemployment insurance will take its place.

By the end of last year, there were 1.53 million laid-off workers from state-owned companies nationwide, with 930,000 currently registered in re-employment service centers.

Ministry spokesman Hu Xiaoyi said officials will expand the unemployment insurance system this year to employees of non-state-owned enterprises. So far, a dozen provinces - mostly in the east and the north - have established such systems, while western areas will catch up gradually.

Meanwhile, the number of jobless young people is on the rise. Statistics show young people make up an increasing part of the unemployed, 0.7 percent more than that from the same period over last year.

Analysts say the upward expansion in college enrolment in recent years is much to blame since it has ignored unbalanced industrial development and has failed to match market demands.

The undesirable employment situation can also be found in some poor areas, several industries and some special groups, including the disabled.

The ministry said it will produce a new package of measures to solve employment problems among laid-off workers, college students and the rural labor force during the next year.

(33)

A.To adopt a three-year policy.

B.To provide subsidies.

C.To create more job opportunities.

D.To adopt a system of unemployment insurance.

Questions 31~35 are based on the following passage. For most thinkers since the Greek p
hilosophers, it was self-evident that the re is something called human nature, something that constitutes the essence of man. There were various views about what constitutes it, but there was agreement that such an essence exists—that is to say, that there is something by virtue of which man is man. Thus man was defined as a rational being, as a social animal, an animal that can make tools, or a symbol-making animal.

More recently, this traditional view has begun to be questioned. One reason for this change was the increasing emphasis given to the historical approach to man. An examination of the history of humanity suggested that man in our epoch is so different from man in previous times that it seemed unrealistic to assume that men in every age have had in common something that can be called “human nature.” The historical approach was reinforced, particularly in the United States, by studies in the field of cultural anthropology (人类学). The study of primitive peoples has discovered such a diversity of customs, values, feelings, and thoughts that many anthropologists arrived at the concept that man is born as a blank sheet of paper on which each culture writes its text. Another factor contributing to the tendency to deny the assumption of a fixed human nature was that the concept has so often been abused as a shield behind which the most inhuman acts are committed. In the name of human nature, for example, Aristotle and most thinkers up to the eighteenth century defended slavery. Or in order to prove the rationality and necessity of the capitalist form. of society, scholars have tried to make a case for acquisitiveness, competitiveness, and selfishness as innate (天生的) human traits. Popularly, one refers cynically to “human nature” in accepting the inevitability of such undesirable human behavior. as greed, murder, cheating and lying.

Another reason for skepticism about the concept of human nature probably lies in the influence of evolutionary thinking. Once man came to be seen as developing in the process of evolution, the idea of a substance which is contained in his essence seemed untenable. Yet I believe it is precisely from an evolutionary standpoint that we can expect new insight into the problem of the nature of man.

第31题:The traditional view of “human nature” was strongly challenged by ________.

A.the emergence of the evolutionary theory

B.the historical approach to man

C.new insight into human behavior.

D.the philosophical analysis of slavery
