听力原文: Cars are an important part of life in the United States. (29) Without a car most people feel that they are poor. And even if a person is poor he doesn't feel really poor when he has a car. The car made the United States a nation on wheels. And it helped make the United States what it is today. There are three reasons the car became so popular in the United States. First of all the country is a huge one and Americans like to move around in it. The car provides the most comfortable and cheapest form. of transportation. With a car people can go any place without spending a lot of money. The second reason that cars are popular is the fact that the United States never really developed an efficient and inexpensive form. of public transportation. Long-distance trains have never been as common in the United States as they are in other parts of the world. Nowadays there is a good system of air-service provided by planes. But it is too expensive to be used frequently. (30) The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence is what really made cars popular. Americans don't like to wait for a bus, or a train or even a plane. They don't like to have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. And this is the freedom that Americans want most to have. (31) The gas shortage has caused a big problem for Americans. But the answer will not be a bigger system of public transportation. The real solution will have to be a new kind of car, which does not use so much gas.

(30)

A.When they don't have a car.

B.When they live in a huge country.

C.When they don't use planes.

D.when they have a car.

听力原文:Are electric cars the wave of the future? Automobile manufactures are under press

听力原文: Are electric cars the wave of the future? Automobile manufactures are under pressure to develop cars that do not pollute. One powerful motive is a California law requiring that by the year 2000, 10% of new car sales in the state be so-called "zero emission vehicles". These cars must put no pollution, whatsoever, in the atmosphere.

California is a huge market for the automobile companies. So they are working hard to meet the standards. So far, the electric car seems to be the best alternative. So the big advantage of the electric cars is that they don't pollute. However, there will be a competition with gas-powered cars and that's where the weaknesses come out. The big problem is that the batteries that power electric cars weigh a lot relative to the amount of power they deliver. For instance, in one prototype electric car, the batteries weigh 400 kilograms and they provide enough energy to go 250 kilometers before recharging, which takes 8 hours. Compare that to a moderately fuel-efficient conventional car, it can go 600 to 700 kilometers on a tank of gas and refilling takes just minutes.

If there are other drains on the electric cars' batteries besides the motor, headlights, air-conditioning or heater, its already limited range would be significantly reduced. So, automobile engineers are trying to make more powerful batteries that would increase the cars' range and make them more attractive to buyers.

(33)

A.Automobile safety.

B.Increasing fuel efficiency.

C.California's pollution laws.

D.Electric-powered cars.

听力原文:There is increasing scientific evidence that large cars cause more highway accide

听力原文: There is increasing scientific evidence that large cars cause more highway accidents than small cars. In the news recently was the story of a woman who died of a heart attack while driving her station wagon. The car was moving so fast that it went through the highway-dividing fence, resulting in a collision in which five people died. Those unnecessary deaths are attributable in part to the woman's choice of a large automobile. A lighter and smaller car probably wouldn't have gone through the fence, because the heavier the ear, the greater the force it will have in a collision. Furthermore, even if the lighter car had broken through the fence, its remaining energy would have been much less, and this would have reduced the chances of serious injury or death. Because of its small size, it might have missed the other car completely. The present design of the oversized automobile is largely responsible ant only for the increasing death toll on the highway but also for the rapid depletion of our resources of petroleum, for the pollution of our environment, for urban sprawl, and for the congestion and inconvenience of our cities.

(30)

A.The story of a woman who died of a heart attack.

B.The story of a car going through the highway-dividing fence.

C.The story of a collision in which five people died.

听力原文:What kind of car will we be driving by the year 20107 It may be rather different

听力原文: What kind of car will we be driving by the year 20107 It may be rather different from the type we know today. With the next decade, bringing greater change than the past 50 years, the people who will be designing the models of tomorrow believe that environmental problems may well accelerate the pace of the car' s development. The vision is that of a machine with 3 wheels instead of 4, electrically-powered, environmentally clean and able to drive itself along intelligent roads, equipped with built-in power supplies. Future cars will pick up the fuel during long journeys from a power source built into the road, or stored in small quantifies for travelling in the city. Instead of today' s seating arrangement, two in front, two or three behind, all facing forward, the 2010 car will have an interior with adults and children in a family circle. This view of future carls based on a much more sophisticated road system. Cars will be automatically controlled by a computer. All the drivers will have to do is to say where to go and the computer will do the rest. It will become impossible for cars to crash into one another. The technology already exists for the car to become a true automobile.

(33)

A.They will be much bigger.

B.They will have more seats.

C.They will have three wheels.

D.They will need intelligent drivers.

听力原文:W: With us now, is Malcolm Bricklin, CEO of Visionary Vehicles.

M: Hello, everyone.

W: We have been hearing a couple of things about this news that Ford Motor Company is slashing up to 30,000 jobs, shutting down 14 plants nationwide. Is it a big deal if we are no longer manufacturing these cars, Malcolm?

M: I think it's a huge deal. I mean the companies are massive employers both directly and indirectly, If you look at Ford after their restructuring, they've actually got 87,000 employees which is twice as many as Microsoft have worldwide. Moreover, if you look at those jobs, they are very high-paying jobs. These are people who can afford to buy their own products.

W: Er, it seems to indicate a big hit for our economy if these jobs go bye-bye.

M: Yeah, it's a really sad day for America.

W: But it is not as if cars are stopped being made, right?

M: Correct. Still a large number of cars are being made by American manufacturers. More than haft of the American cars sold in America are American. So what has happened over time is that as the market share has fallen, foreign car companies have come in taken over plants and set up new plants, and they have taken over that capacity. So, it is not like there are fewer cars being produced in America than there were 30 years ago.

W: Let me ask you about the Chinese coming in. What would it mean to American jobs, if and when that happens?

M: The Chinese cars we have seen so far aren't that great and they don't have the branding necessary to make a huge impact in the world stage.

(23)

A.It is closing down some factories in the US.

B.It no longer offers high-paying jobs.

C.The number of its employees is doubled after the restructuring.

D.It is manufacturing as many cars as before.

听力原文: The United States is full of automobiles. There are still many families without cars, blt some families have two or even more. However, cats are used for more than pleasure. They are a necessary part of life.

Cars are used for business. They are driven to offices and factories by workers who have no other way to get to their jobs. When salesmen are sent to different parts of the city, they have to drive in order to carry their products. Farmers have to drive into the city in order to get supplies.

Sometimes small children must be driven to school. In some cities school buses are used only when children live more than a mile from the school. When the children are too young to walk that far, their mothers take turns driving them to school. One mother drives on Mondays, taking her own children and her neighbors' children as well. Another mother drives on Tuesdays, another on Wednesdays, and so on. This is called "forming a car pool". Men also form. car pools, with three or four men taking turns driving to the place where they all work. More cur pools should be formed in order to put fewer automobiles on the road and to use less gasoline. Parking is a great problem, and so is the traffic in and around cities. Too many cars are being driven. Something will have to be done about the use of cars.

(23)

A.To get supplies.

B.To get to their jobs.

C.To carry their products.

D.To enjoy themselves.
