听力原文:M: So how come you chose psychology?

W: Well, at lust I didn't have any clear idea of what I wanted to do after university, I didn't say to myself "I want to be a clinical psychologist or a researcher or anything like that". I suppose I have just always been interested in people and the way they act.

M: And what was the course like?

W: It was just great. The teachers were all really friendly and they had this special approach to teaching. The whole course was based on a problem-solving approach.

M: I see from your CV that you graduated in 1997 and after that, let me see...

W: I got a job with the department of employment. It was only a temporary thing for about six months. I used to have to design questionnaires and things like that for surveys that they carried out. And I guess the psychology course at college helped me a lot.

M: So why did you leave?

W: Well, four years is a long time to be asking people questions. You know those sorts of questions about washing powder and shampoo. After two years of doing that I felt that while I could do it well, now I want to do something else that's a little different. It just wasn't challenging for me any more and because I needed a challenge I decided to move when I heard about the position of Senior Researcher here at institute I knew that's exactly what I want.

(23)

A.Be a researcher in the area.

B.Be a clinical psychologist.

C.Know how to be a problem-solver.

D.Know more about people's behavior.

听力原文:W: What are you doing?

M: I’m ordering some filing cabinets out of a catalog.

W: What do you need them for?

M: There’s so much stuff piling up in my dormitory room. If I don’t do something soon, I won’t be able to move in there.

W: Do you usually order from a catalog?

M: Sometimes. Why?

W: Oh, it’s just in the history class today we were talking about how the catalog sales business first got started in the US. A Chicago retailer, Montgomery Ward started it in the late 1800s. It was really popular among farmers. It was difficult for them to make it to the big city stores so they ordered from catalogs.

M: Was Ward the only one in the business?

W: At first, but another person named Richard Sears started his own catalog after he heard how much money Ward was making.

M: What made them so popular?

W: Farmers trusted Ward and Sears for one thing. They delivered the products the farmers paid for and even refunded the price of things the farmers weren’t satisfied with. The catalog became so popular that in some counties school teachers even used them as textbooks.

M: Textbooks?

W: Yeah, students practice spelling the names and adding up the prices of things in the catalogs.

M: Was everybody that thrilled about it?

W: That’s doubtful. Say they drove some small store owners out of business. Sears and Ward sold stuff in such large quantities. They were able to undercut the prices at some small family owned stores.

(23)

A.The relationship between farmers, Ward and Sears.

B.The development of the catalog sales business.

C.The relationship between the catalog and textbooks.

D.The story of Chicago retailer.

听力原文: Why must we pay taxes? The answer is that the government needs money for many things, for example to pay its soldiers, sailors and airmen, to build roads, bridges, offices, schools, etc; and only the people of the country can supply the money.

One of the most important taxes is income-tax which a person pays according to the amount of his income, whether he is a merchant, a doctor, a lawyer, a shopkeeper. This is called a "direct" tax, because it is paid in money direct to the government.

Another tax is paid on goods such as watches, new clothes, tobacco, wine, etc. When they are brought into a country, such a tax is paid as part of the price of these goods if they are later sold in shops. We call it "indirect" tax because it is paid indirectly through the shopkeeper.

People usually complain about having to pay taxes, but they forget that the money is spent on things that they and their families need. We need policemen to catch thieves, to see that men obey the laws, to direct traffic, etc., and they must be paid what they earn; children need education and there must be schools and teachers; we want our streets to be kept clean, and the wages of men who do this kind of work have to be paid.

Taxes, anyway, cannot be avoided. We buy our own food and clothes and pay for our own amusements; but there are several things that the State finds the money for, and that are necessary for us if our society is to continue. We have no real cause to complain, when we are asked to supply money to be spent for the good of ourselves and for our fellow citizens.

(30)

A.The tax that one pays to the companies instead of government.

B.The tax that one pays through the shopkeeper for the goods.

C.The tax is paid as part of the price of the goods.

D.The tax is not paid to the government.

听力原文:M: Where are you going, Catherine? Today is Saturday.

W: Saturday isn't a holiday for me anymore. I have to tutor for three hours every Saturday afternoon.

M: That's great. I wish I could find a part-time job to make a little pocket money. How did you find this job?

W: I saw a "Tutor Wanted" notice stuck on a light pole near the bus stop. I phoned the number and I got the job. It's not too hard to find a part-time job these days. But Richard, studying should always come first. Do you think that you have enough time to handle a part-time job?

M: It's hard to say. If I can get a job, I will try very hard to make good use of my time.

W: We do spend too much time hanging around and doing nothing. Richard, your English is perfect. Why don't you find a job teaching English?

M: But I don't have any teaching experience. Speaking and teaching are two different things.

W: I don't have any experience either. We're just students. People know this. But we are young and energetic, and the most important thing is that we don't ask for as much pay as professional teachers do.

M: OK! Where should I start?

W: You can post some notices on the community bulletin board and some other places. But remember: don't post them on the wire poles because you'll probably be fined for it.

M: Thank you for your advice, Catherine.

W: My pleasure. Goad luck.

(20)

A.She does some teaching work.

B.She does her homework.

C.She works as a babysitter.

D.She attends weekend lessons to improve her English.
