Some people hate everything that is modern. They cannot imagine how anyone can really like
modern music; they find it hard to accept the new fashions in clothing; they think that all modern painting is ugly; and they seldom have a good word for the new buildings that are being built everywhere in the world. Such people look for perfection in everything, and they take their standards of perfection from the past. They are usually impatient with anyone who is brave enough to experiment with new or to express himself or the age in materials original ways.

It is, of course, true that many artists do not succeed in their work and instead produce works that can only be considered as failures. If the work of art is a painting, the artist’s failure concerns himself alone, but if it is a building, his failure concerns others too, because it may damage the beauty of the whole place. This does sometimes happen, but it is completely untrue to say, as some people do, that modern architecture is nothing. We can’t judge every modern building by the standards of the ancient time, even though we admire the ancient buildings. Technologically, the modern buildings are more advanced. The modern architect knows he should learn from the ancient works, but with his greater resources of knowledge and materials, he will never be content to imitate the past. He is too proud to do that.

Technologically, the modern buildings are more advanced. The sentence means _____.

A.the ancient architects had no technology

B.the modern architects use more advanced technology

C.the modern buildings are advanced because they are completely different from the ancient buildings

D.the modern buildings are more beautiful

Some people hate everything that is modern because _______.A.they are aged

B.they find it hard to accept modern things

C.they take their standards of perfection from the Greek

D.they look at things by the standards of the past

The writer thinks the failure of a building _______.A.means nothing

C.concerns only the artist

D.concerns all the people in the world

The writer of the passage thinks that ________.A.it is true to say artists fail in their work

B.it is untrue to say artists fail in their work

C.it is true to say some artists fail in their work

D.it is true to say only painters fail in their work

The writer thinks that _________.A.we can’t judge buildings by the ancient standards

B.we can’t judge all the buildings by the ancient standards

C.we can’t judge all the modern buildings by the ancient standards

D.we can’t judge modern buildings

听力长对话2:Man: Hello。 Yes?

Man: Hello。 Yes?

Woman: Hello。 Is that the sales department?

M: Yes, it is。

W:Oh, well。 My name is Jane Kingsbury of GPF limited。 We need some supplies for our design office。

M: Oh, what sort?

W:Well, first of all, we need one complete new drawing board。

M: DO44 or DO45?

W:Ah, I don’t know。 What’s the difference?

M: Well, the 45 costs 15 pounds more。

W:So what’s the total price then?

M:It’s 387 pounds。

W:Dose that include valued-added tax?

M: Oh, I’m not sure。 Most of the prices do。 Yes, I think it does。

W:What are the boards actually made of?

M: Oh, I don’t know。 I think it‘s a sort of plastic stuff these days。 It’s white anyway。

W:And how long does it take to deliver?

M: Oh, I couldn’t really say。 It depends on how much work we’ve got and how many other orders there are to send out, you know。

W:Ok, now we also want some drawing pens, ink and rulers, and some drawing paper。

M: Oh dear。 The girl who takes all those supplies isn’t here this morning。 So I can’t take those orders for you。 I only do the equipment you see。

W:Ok, well, perhaps I’ll ring back tomorrow。

M: So do you want the drawing board then?

W:Oh, I have to think about it。 Thanks very much。 I’ll let you know。 Good-bye。

M: Thank you。 Good-bye。

听力原文:M: Hey, Lily. Seems you got some sun this vocation.

W: Yeah, you may say so. I spent the vocation at the beach.

M: Oh, yeah? That's great! Where did you stay?

W: Some friends of mine live out there. And they invited me for as long as I wanted to stay.

M: So, what are you doing back here already?

W: Oh, I have a research project waiting for me. And I just couldn't do any serious studying at the beach.

M: I guess so. Well, what did you do out there? I mean, besides lie out in the sun, obviously.

W: I walked my friend's dogs along the beach and I played some volleyball. You know, I never realize how hard it is to run on sand. I couldn't even get through a whole game before I had to sit down. It's much easier to run on the wet sand near the water.

M: Did you go swimming?

W: I wanted to, but they said the water wasn't warm enough for that until a couple of months from then on. So I just wetted in up to my knees.

M: It all sounds so relaxing. I wish I could get away to the beach like that.

W: Of course you could. Don't tell me you spent the vocation in the library again.

(23)

A.At the beach.

B.In Sun Company.

C.At home.

D.On campus.
