听力原文: Nobody can ever know who made the first doll. Perhaps a prehistoric man picked up a piece of wood or stone that looked like a human, What we do know is that early dolls were for magic and not for children. They were meant to bring good luck. The Greeks and Romans made wooden and clay dolls. Greek and Roman girls stayed with them until just before they were married when they took them to temple to show that they were grown up. About six hundred years ago, the dolls were sent all over French and abroad to show everyone how good French fashions were. The dolls wore nothing special. It was the place that counted. Dolls really became children's toys around eighteen hundred. Factories made plenty of them and rag dolls were made at home. Until about nineteen hundred dolls usually looked like grown-ups, not children. And later, dolls whose eyes could open and shut became popular.

(30)

A.They were first made of wood or stone.

B.They were invented in Greek.

C.They were meant to bring good luck.

D.They were children's favourite toys.

听力原文: How we look and how we appear to others probably worries us more when we are in our teens or early twenties than at any other time in our life. Few of us are content to accept ourselves as we are, and few are brave enough to ignore the trends of fashion.

Most fashion magazines or TV advertisements try to persuade us that we should dress in a certain way or behave in a certain manner. If we do, we will be able to meet new people with confidence and deal with every situation confidently and without embarrassment. The advertisers show us the latest fashionable styles and we are constantly under pressure to follow the fashion in case our friends think we are odd or dull.

What causes fashions to change? Sometimes convenience or practical necessity or just the fancy of an influential person can establish a fashion. Take hats, for example. In cold climates, early buildings were cold inside, so people wore hats indoors as well as outside. In recent times, the late President Kennedy caused a depression in the American hat industry by not wearing hats: more American men followed his example.

There is also a cyclical pattern in fashion. In the 1920s in Europe and America, short skirts became fashionable. After World War Two, they dropped to ankle length. Then they got shorter and shorter until the miniskirt was in fashion. After a few more years, skirts became longer again.

Today, society is much freer and easier than it used to be. It is no longer necessary to dress like everyone else.

(33)

A.They are reluctant to follow the trends in fashion.

B.They are concerned about fashions only in younger age.

C.They are far from neglecting what is in fashion.

D.They feel eager to chase after fashions.

听力原文: The African ancestors of today's black Americans were brought to the U. S. slave
s in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. They worked on farms, especially the large farms in the southern states.Slowly they became a necessary part of the economic system of the South.

Slaves did not have the rights of people, according to the law, they were“things”which belonged to the person who bought them. They had to obey the orders of their owners without question.(32) They were not allowed to learn to read, because their owners feared that educated slaves would begin to think about the injustice of the system and would learn to struggle for their freedom. Slaves had to work long hours in extremely unhealthy conditions.Their owners had complete power over them. They could be bought and sold like animals. At the slave markets, black children were separated from their parents and never saw them again.(33) Slave owners had the right to punish severely any slave who broke rules or protested against the system. Slaves were often beaten brutally by their owners or killed.(34) After the Civil War, one free slave reported that his owners killed an older slave who was teaching him to read. There was a law against brutality to slaves, (35) so in theory an owner who treated a slave badly could be punished. In practice, however, the law meant nothing.Another law said that slaves could not give evidence against white people,so very few owners were ever punished for their brutality.

(33)

A.They were too busy working to learn to read.

B.Their owners were afraid they could read.

C.They had no one to teach them to read.

D.They thought reading was not necessary.

Passage One

Questions 17 to 19 are based on the passage you have just heard.

听力原文:

Passage One I first met Joe Gans when we were both nine years old, which is probably the

only reason he’s one of my best friends. If I had first met Joe as a freshman in high

school, we wouldn’t even have had the chance to get to know each other. Joe is a day

student, but I am a boarding student. We haven’t been in the same classes, sports, or

extracurricular activities.

Nonetheless, I spend nearly every weekend at his house and we talk on the phone every

night. This is not to say that we would not have been compatible if we had first met in our

freshman year. Rather, we would not have been likely to spend enough time getting to know

each other due to the lack of immediately visible mutual interests. In fact, to be honest,

I struggle even now to think of things we have in common. But maybe that’s what makes us

enjoy each other’s company so much. When I look at my friendship with Joe, I wonder how

many people I’ve known whom I never disliked, but simply didn’t take the time to get to

know. Thanks to Joe, I have realized how little basis there is for the social divisions

that exist in every community. Since this realization, I have begun to make an even more

determined effort to find friends in unexpected people and places.

Questions 17to 19 are based on the passage you have just heard.

17. Why does the speaker say Joe Gans became one of his best friends?

A.They shared mutual friends in school.

B.They had many interests in common.

C.They shared many extracurricular activities.

D.They had known each other since childhood.
