W: Hello, Tony. So what shall we work on today？
M: Well, the problem is that this writing assignment isn't coming out right. What I thought I was writing on was to talk about what a particular sport means to me when I participate in.
W: What sport did you choose？
M: I decided to write about cross-country skiing.
W: What are you going to say about skiing？
M: That's the problem. I thought I would write about how peaceful it is to be out in the country.
W: So why is that a problem？
M: I'd like to start describing how quiet it is to be out in the woods. I keep mentioning how much effort it takes to keep going. Cross-country skiing isn't as easy as some people think. W: Then you'll have to include that in your point. The peacefulness of cross-country skiing is the kind you earn by effort. Why leave that out？ Part of your point you knew beforehand, but part you discovered as you wrote. That's common, right？
M: Yeah, I guess so.

M: That's not a bad idea. I bought plenty of books and things back with me last summer. That would be great resource material. Now if I can only remember where I put them.

M: Great! I read that they've added a couple of emperor penguins from Antarctica.
W: I was hoping to stay in the warmer section. You know, they have some penguins here from the Galapagos Islands-and that's practically on the equator.
M: But the emperor penguin's huge! It's a lot bigger than the Galapagos penguin—in fact, it's bigger than all the other penguins—almost four feet high.

M: The male rolls it onto his feet and then covers it with the lower part of his belly.
W: Then what？
M: For two whole months. During the worst part of the winter, he huddles together with other male penguins to keep the eggs warm.
W: So the female brings him food？
M: No. See, the penguin can fast for up to four months. The female comes back after the chick hatches. When she does, the male goes out to sea to get food for himself and the chick.

M: I come from the Rez, an Indian reservation. I grew up there, lived there until 18.
I lived on and off the reservation for the next 6 or 7 years during college. I lived there after I graduated, worked at a high school exchange program. I thought I do that kind of job to support my writing. Day jobs that require no emotional investment beyond 8 hours a day where I wouldn't need to bring work home. I didn't want to be part of management or anybody important at the job. I wanted to be completely replaceable, that is what I thought I would be doing for most of my life and writing. Then I got a ground and my first book got a frontpage review in the New York Times Book Review.
W: When did writing enter your life？
M: Books are always being in my life. My dad love books and most of what he read were westerns-spy novels, mysteries. I grew up loving books, copying my father's love for books. But nobody has showed me a book written by an Indian, not even one piece of poem. Nothing. At that time I was going to be a physician. I loved math and science. I got to college, couldn't handle physiology, and was looking around for options and took a poetry writing class for fun.
W: Poetry was your way in？
M: Yes, that's where I started. I took the class and honestly, I just thought it would be an easy grade. But I completely underestimated poetry and what it would do to me and the realm of possibility for it. I took the class and was hooked about ten minutes after reading my first contemporary poem.

W: They offered me an assistantship, It's better than I'd hoped for. (20) The stipend will cover tuition, room and board. With that I won't have to sponge off my folk. And you know in the last term, for the whole fee, I wasted so much time and energy in it, and now I could muster my courage to handle my study.

W: No, Miami University.
M: So, you'll go to the sunny South. The view in Miami is fantastic and you could have a fun time there.
W: You've got a regional hang-up, Burt. This Miami University just happens to be in Oxford, Ohio. But I could also enjoy another viewpoint there, and I prefer the Oxford sight.
M: What's your field？ Have you made any change？
W: (21) I'm going to major in Education, concentrating on Teaching English as a Foreign Language. What with working part time, it will probably take me two years to get my M. A. degree. And until that time I could save the fee or the tuition.
M: So, (21) you are not following in your father's footsteps？
W: No, writing doesn't appeal to me, but I'm worried about the make up credits.
