Proper street behavior. in the United States re quires a nice balance of attention and ina

Much of eye behavior. is so【B7】that we react to it only on the intuitive level. You interpret this as a sign—a polite one—【B11】he is interested in you as a person【B12】than just in the topic of conversation. Probably you also feel that he is both【B13】and sincere.

All this has been demonstrated in elaborate【B14】. Subjects sit and talk in the psychologist's laboratory,【B15】of the fact that their eye behavior. is being【B16】from a one-way vision screen. In one fairly typical experiment,【B17】were induced to cheat while performing a task, then were【B18】and observed. It was found that those who had【B19】met the inter viewer's eyes less often than was 【B20】, an indication that "shifty eyes"—to use the mystery writers' stock phrase—can actually be a tip-off to an attempt to deceive or to feelings of guilt.

听力原文: American visitors to Eastern Asia are often surprised and puzzled by how Asian cultures and customs differ from those in the United States. What's considered typical or proper social conduct in one country may be regard as odd, improper or even rude in the other. For example, people from some Eastern Asian countries may begin a conversation with a stranger by asking personal questions about family, home or work. Such questions are thought to be friendly, whereas they might be considered offensive in the United States. On the other hand, people in most Asian cultures are far more guarded about expressing their feelings publicly than most Americans are. Openly displaying annoyance or anger, yelling, arguing loudly and so forth is considered ill-mannered in countries such as Japan. Many Eastern Asians prefer to hold their emotions in check and instead express themselves with great politeness. They try not to be blunt and avoid making direct criticisms. In fact, they often keep their differences of opinion to themselves and merely smile and remain silent rather than engage in a confrontation. By comparison, Americans are often frank about displaying both positive and negative emotions on the street and in other public places. Americans visiting Asia should keep in mind that such behavior. may cause offense. A major difference between American culture and most Asian cultures is that in Asia, the community is more important than the individual. Most Americans are considered a success when they make a name for themselves.

(30)

A.By greeting each other very politely.

B.By exchanging their views on public affairs.

C.By displaying their feelings and emotions.

D.By asking each other some personal questions.

No one in my family could believe Allegra had any disability

, much less one as severe as hers. To them a disability was physical, something you could see. They knew her as a happy, normal child. That's how it is with a learning disability -you don't see obvious physical symptoms.

But as she grew out of preschool, she would pretend to read-I knew she was pretending because the book was upside down. She withdrew into her own world where she could fantasize about being a ballet dancer, a Broadway actress or a figure skater. In the real world, ballet classes and music lessons led only to confusion, frustration and, ultimately, disappointment.

As for school, there was no way she could be included in a mainstream classroom. I went through every special school in New York, only to be told over and over: "She doesn't belong here." The last blow came a few months after the diagnosis, when I was at a pay phone on 72nd Street, waiting for an answer from the very last school on my list. Finally a cold voice came on-I can still hear it-and said: "I'm sorry, but we feel this isn't the place for her." I hung up and stared at the phone in tears.

I had lived my life as the daughter of Henry Ford II, and for the first time in my life I faced a problem that neither money nor position could solve. I nearly gave up, but I knew I couldn't. Without me, my daughter stood no chance of making it.
