听力原文: During the last few years, there has been an enormous increase in the number of shops, stores and supermarkets which provide facilities for self-service. Their general purpose is to provide goods of every description attractively and cleanly and in perfect condition, so that the customer can serve herself, and then pay for the goods with. the minimum of delay.

The organizers of a self-service store have their difficulties. They must display a great number of goods in a minimum space without covering up anything. They must deal with perishable foodstuffs requiring different ranges of temperature; and they must arrange a speedy flow of customers past the cash registers without overtaxing the operators.

For the purposes of display, many devices are used such as long lengths of adjustable shelves to take various sizes of packs, rotating circular shelves, islands of display stands, racks for tubed foods, and multi-tiered mobile stalls.

Perishable foodstuffs and quick frozen fruit, vegetables and meat are kept in refrigerated self-service cabinets, which keep goods at the required temperatures. These are at zero Fahrenheit for frozen food, 28-32 degrees for meat and fish, and 40-50 degrees for dairy produce and provisions.

Some of the advantages of self-service seem to be that there is no waiting to be served; there is a wide variety of choice, and it is claimed that prepacked meat and vegetables are hygienic. Shopping is said to be more "streamlined" and more economical. Nevertheless many people still prefer to be served by a small shopkeeper who knows them personally and will deliver goods to their homes.

(33)

A.Supermarkets provide cheaper foods.

B.There is less delay in choosing in supermarkets.

C.Food and meat are more clean and more tasty.

D.Air-conditioning is at different temperature.

听力原文: I hope you have all finished reading the assigned chapter on insurance-so that y
ou're prepared for our discussion today. But, before we start, I'd like to mention a few things your text doesn't go into.

It's interesting to note that insurance has existed in some form. for a very long time. The earliest insurance policies provided shipping protection for merchants as far back as 3000 B. C.

In general, the contracts were often no more than verbal agreements. They granted loans to merchants with the understanding that if a particular shipment of goods was lost at sea, the loan didn't have to be repaid. Interest on the loans varied according to how risky it was to transport the goods. During periods of heavy piracy at sea, for example, the amount of interest and the cost of the policy went up considerably. So, you can see how insurance helped encourage international trade. Even the most cautious merchants became willing to risk shipping their goods over long distances-not to mention in hazardous weather conditions-when they had this kind of protection available.

Generally speaking, the basic form. of an insurance policy has been pretty much the same since the Middle Ages. There are four points that were prominent then and remain dominant in all policies today. These were outlined in chapter six and will serve as the basis for the rest of today's discussion.

听力原文: This is Ray McCarthy with the news. Reports are coming in of a major train crash in Japan. (32) A passenger train carrying hundreds of workers home from the center of Tokyo is reported to have hit an oncoming goods train. Both were traveling at high speed. (33) Figures are not yet available but it is believed that the death toll could be as high as 300, with hundreds more injured. Emergency and rescue services rushed to the scene. Police dogs spent hours searching the store for a bag which the caller claimed contained 50 pounds of explosives. Nothing was found and the store was given the all-clear by opening time this morning. A police spokesman said that this was the third bomb scare within a week and that we should all be on our guard.

And finally, the motoring organizations have issued a warning to drivers following the recent falls of snow in many parts of the country. (35) Although the falls may be slight, they say extra care is needed.

听力原文: Thanksgiving Day is one of the biggest holidays in America. Every family comes together at their parents' house, and talks about their lives. They also have a big party. Usually, they cook a big turkey and many side dishes such as pumpkin pie. And they have a nice holiday with their family.

It originated in the 1600's. The Pilgrims, who were a group of people from England, arrived in America and some Indians helped them. The Indians taught them how to plant grain such as corn, vegetables and pumpkins. So, after that, the Pilgrims had a party for their Indian friends every year.

During this holiday, many shops have promotions and big sales. The day after Thanksgiving Day, which is called "Black Friday", almost every store displays their cheapest prices. Almost every American goes shopping to catch the cheapest goods before others. It should be described as a "Shopping War". If you wait and go shopping on Sunday, it will be too late! You won't be able to buy many things, because many goods will be sold out already. But, sometimes window shopping is a nice experience on Thanksgiving holiday.

In Korea, there is a very similar holiday, which is called "Chu-suk". This holiday also expresses thankfulness for ancestors. People will give thanks for the plentiful harvest that year. Almost all Koreans come together with their family, see relatives who live far away and have an ancestor-memorial service with many kinds of food. Chu-suk is almost the same as Thanksgiving Day.

Every human seems to feel thankfulness for their ancestors, and once a year, they celebrate their good harvest and health. The styles of these two holidays are a little different but the feelings and emotions are the same.

(33)

A.England.

B.Korea.

C.France.
