听力原文: Watching movies is a good way to improve your listening: I would stress the usefulness of repetition. So watch a DVD of an English-language film with Chinese subtitles. Then,a week or so later, watch the film again with the subtitles covered up.This time, you will know broadly what the characters are trying to say, which will help your brain link the English words with their meanings.Of course, you can pause and rewind the film if there are certain bits that really puzzle you.

The next step would be to find a way to listen to the soundtrack of the film without watching it.You should know the scenes and the story well by now,so by removing the pictures your brain will really focus on the language spoken.

Before you do any of this, think carefully about what film you want to use to practice your listening. If you want to learn American English,be sure to watch a film set in the USA.If you choose a really well-regarded film, one that has won lots of Academy Awards, for example, you will probably be able to buy the screenplay of the film, which will be very useful to you.

Lastly, choose a film that you are not going to get tired of if you watch it three times!

This is a very satisfying way to practice your listening. You will really feel that you are improving.

What message does the speaker try to convey in this passage?

A.One can improve listening by watching movies.

B.Everybody wants to improve listening nowadays.

C.There is a good way to memorize vocabularies.

D.One needs to work hard to improve English.

听力原文: To get us started this semester, I'm going to spend the first two classes giving you background lectures about some basic cinematic concepts. Once you are a little more familiar with basic film terminology, we will be ready to look at the history of movies in the United States. You will be expected to attend showings of films on Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock at Jennings Auditorium, that's our lab. Then during our Wednesday seminar, we will discuss in depth the movie we saw the night before. We're not covering silent movies in this course. We will begin with the first talking motion picture, The Jazz Singer, released in 1927. The next week we'll be looking at The Gold Digger of 1933, a piece that is very representative of the escapist trend in films released during the Depression. Some of the films we will be watching will probably be new to you, like Frank Capra's Why We Fight. Others you might have already seen on TV, like Rebel Without a Cause starring James Deane, or Stanley Cooper's Doctor's Strange Love. However, I hope you will see even familiar films with new eye. In the last three weeks of the course, we will be watching films from the 1980s, and you will choose one of them as the subject for an extensive written critique. We will talk more about the requirements of the critique later in the semester.

(33)

A.To look at the history of movies in the United States.

B.Arrangement for the movie course.

C.Looking at The Gold Digger of 1933.

D.Watching Frank Capra's Why We Fight.

听力原文: Movies are the most popular form. of entertainment for millions of Americans. They go to the movies to escape their normal everyday existence and to experience a life more exciting than their own. They may choose to see a particular film because they like the actors or because they've heard the film has a good story. But the main reason why people go to the movies is to escape. Sitting in a dark theatre, watching the images on the screen, they enter another world that is very real to them. They become involved in the lives of the characters in the movie, and for two hours, they forget all about their own problems. They are in a dream world where things often appear to he more romantic and beautiful than in real life. The biggest "dream factories" are in Hollywood, the capital of the film industry. Each year, Hollywood studios make hundreds of movies that are shown all over the world.

American movies are popular because they tell interesting stories and they are well-made. They provide the public with heroes who do things the average person would like to do but often can't. People have to cope with many problems and frustrations in real life, so they feel encouraged when they see the "good guys" win in the movies.

(20)

A.To enjoy a good story.

B.To see the actors and actresses.

C.To experience an exciting life.

D.To escape their everyday life.

听力原文:W: I'm tired of watching television. Let's go to the movies tonight.

M: All right. Do you want to go downtown? Or is there a good movie in the neighborhood?

W: I'd rather not spend a lot of money. What does the paper say about neighborhood theaters?

M: Here's the list on page six. Here it is. Where's the Rialto? There's a good movie there.

W: That's too far away. And it's bard to find a place to park there.

M: Well, the Grand Theater has Gone With the Wind.

W: I saw that years ago. I don' t want to see it again. Anyway, it's too long. We wouldn't get home until midnight.

M: The Center has a horror film. You wouldn't want to see that.

W: No, indeed. I wouldn't be able to sleep tonight.

M: That's about all there is. Unless we change our minds and go downtown.

W: No, we just can't afford it. There must be something else we haven't seen.

M: Here, look for yourself. I can't find anything else.

W: Look at this!

M: What?

W: In the television schedule, there's a baseball game on television tonight.

M: I wash' t looking for a TV program. I was looking at the movie ads.

W: I know, but I just happened to notice it. New York is playing Boston.

M: That ought m be good. I wouldn' t mind watching that.

W: OK. Let's stay home. We can go to a movie Friday.

(23)

A.She is tired of staying at home all day.

B.There is a good film in the neighborhood theater.

听力原文:M: I want to do something tonight for a change; let's go to the movies.

W: In this heat? Are you joking?

M: We can go to an outdoor movie. Do you think I'd suggest an indoor one in the middle of the summer in San Diego?

W: I'd rather go out for a meal. The outdoor movies are so uncomfortable.

M: Why don't we do both at the same time? We could pick up some take-away food and eat it in the movie.

W: That sounds like fun. But they never show any good films in the summer. At least not any of the new ones. All you get is the old classics. It's just what we've seen half a dozen times.

M: But that's why they're classics. They're worth seeing again and again.

W: Another objection to outdoor movies is that you can never hear properly. You hear all the traffic from outside.

M: Well, we can find a foreign film with printed translation at the bottom of the screen, then you don't need to hear the sound. I think it would be fun to sit watching an old film and eating a meal at the same time.

W: Last time I went to an outdoor movie, I bought a bar of chocolate to eat as I went in. It was a horror film and I was so shocked I just sat there holding my bar of chocolate until the interval when I found it had melted in my hand and run all down my dress. That was an expensive evening out.

M: Well, we don't go and see a horror film, darling t and take-away meals don't melt.

(20)

A.Their favorite movies

B.Jokes for entertainment.

C.Pastime for the night.

听力原文: Hollywood produces many different kinds of films, including mysteries, musicals, love stories, and horror films. As different as these films may be, they generally have one thing in common conflict. The main character wants something very badly and will do anything to get it. The opponent tries to stop the main character from achieving his goal. This opposition creates conflict, and conflict is the heart of drama. To give an example, let's say the main character is a young man of humble origin who wants to marry the beautiful daughter of a rich banker. The father thinks the young man is unworthy of his daughter, and he does not allow her to see him. The young man, who's very much in love, refuses to give up without a fight. The conflict between the young man and the girl's father is what makes the story interesting; it forces the main character to take action, and through their actions we see them as they actually are. In a good story, the main character changes he is not the same at the end of the story as he was at the beginning. He learns something from his experiences that make him a different, perhaps batter person. And we learn something from watching him. Good movies not only entertain us, they also help us understand a little more about life.

(23)

A.Love.

B.Violence.

C.Conflict.

D.Mystery.

听力原文:M: Since so many of you have asked me how to learn a language, I thought that it
might be useful to take some class time today to discuss it. Betty, you speak several languages, don't you?

W1: Yes, Professor Baker, I speak Spanish and French.

M: And what helped you most in learning those languages?

W1: What helped me most ... well, I studied both languages in high school, and I'm still studying Spanish here at the University, but I think that travel has probably been the most help to me. You see, I've been lucky in that I've lived in Europe. Believe me, I didn't speak very well before I moved there. What do you think of this, Jill?

W2: You're right, Betty, after studying a language, practice is very useful. When you live in a country where the language is spoken, it's ideal. But, you know, sometimes it's difficult to make friends in a new place, even then the people are very friendly.

W1: Yes, I know what you mean. Especially if you don't speak the language too well. I had some problems when I first moved to Europe.

W2: And, of course, some people are shy.

W: That's true.

W2: Professor Baker, whether or not I'm in a country where the language is spoken, I always go to the movies, and whenever I can, 1 watch TV or listen to the radio in the language I'm trying to learn.

W2: Me too. And reading is another way to learn. Books are good, but I think that newspapers and magazines are even better.

M: Probably the best way to learn is to combine all of these ideas: traveling, talking with people, going to movies, watching TV, listening to the radio, and reading books, newspapers and magazines. What do you think?

W1: I agree with that, Professor Baker.

W2: So do I. But I don't believe that it's possible to take advantage of practice opportunities without some knowledge of the language first.

W1:Sure. First it's a good idea to study grammar, vocabulary...

W2: ... and listening, perhaps even reading.

W1: Then practice is very, very helpful.

(23)

A.Language laboratory.

B.Traveling.

C.Studying in high school.

D.Going to movies and watching TV.
