We are all called upon to make a speech sometime in life, but most of us don’t do a ve
ry good job.We may get nervous, forget what we want to say, or talk too long and bore our audience.Later we may think, “Thank goodness, it’s over.I’m not good at public speaking.I hope I never have to do that again.”

It doesn’t have to be that bad. Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech-making.First of all, it is important to plan.Find out everything you can about your subject. And, at the same time, find out as much as you can about your audience.Who are they? Why are they coming to hear you speak? Put yourself in their shoes as you prepare your speech.

Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? There are many possible speaking roles, and each one has its own special characteristics.Don’t spoil your speech by confusing one speaking role with another.

When you are making your speech, try to relax.Speak slowly and clearly and look at people in your audience.Use simple vocabulary and expressions whenever possible.Pause for a few seconds now and then to give your audience a chance to think about what you have said.

If you follow these steps, you’ll see that you don’t have to be afraid of public speaking.

Questions下列各are based on the following passage. Do you find getting up in the morning
so difficult that its painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle. During the hours when you labour through your work you may say that youre "hot". Thats true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as: "Get up, John! Youll be late for work again!" The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what the seenergy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has. You cant change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe youre sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late any way.Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning, but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This wont change your cycle, but youll get up steam and work better at your low point. Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiting more energy or concentration for your sharper hours. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably _____ .

A.he is a lazy person

B.he refuses to follow his own energy cycle

C.he is not sure when his energy is low

D.he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening

When a consumer finds that an item she or he bought is faulty or in some way does not live up to the manufacturer's claim for it, the first step is to present the warranty, or any other records which might help at the store of purchase. In most cases, this action will produce results. However, if it does not there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction.

A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain directly to the store manager. In general, the "higher up" the consumer takes his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled in such a case, it is usually settled in the consumer's favor, assuming, he or she has a just claim.

Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot get to the place of purchase, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter.

Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly and especially when the consumer can show what is wrong with the item he has bought. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed best by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example "The left speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear" is better than "This stereo does not work".

The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the manufacturer if so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and as firmly as possible. But if a polite complaint does not achieve the desired result, the consumer can go a step further. She or he can threaten to take the seller to court or report the seller to a private or pubic organization responsible for protecting consumers' rights.

When a consumer finds that his purchase has a fault in it, the first thing he should do is to ().

A.complain personally to the manager

B.threaten to take the matter to court

C.write a firm letter of complaint to the store of purchase

D.show their written proof of the purchase to the store

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.I have had just about enough of bein
g treated like a second-class citizen, simply because I happened to be that put upon member of society-a customer. The more I go into shops and hotels, banks and post offices, railway stations, airports and the like, the more I’m convinced that things are being run solely to suit the firm, the system, or the union. There seems to be a new motto (座右铭) for the so-called ‘service’ organization-Staff Before Service. How often, for example, have you queued for what seems like hours at the Post Office or the supermarket because there aren’t enough staff on duty at all the service counters? Surely in these days of high unemployment it must be possible to increase counter staff. Yet supermarkets, hinting darkly at higher prices, claim that bringing all their cash registers into operation at any time would increase expenses. And the Post Office says we cannot expect all their service counters to be occupied ‘at times when demand is low’.

It’s the same with hotels. Because waiters and kitchen staff must finish when it suits them, dining rooms close earlier or menu choice is diminished. As for us guests (and how the meaning of that word has been cut away little by little), we just have to put up with it. There’s also the nonsense of so many friendly hotel night porters having been gradually with drawn from service in the interests of ‘efficiency’ (i.e. profits) and replaced by coin-eating machines which supply everything from beer to medicine, not to mention the creeping threat of the tea-making set in your room: a kettle with teabags, milk bags sugar. Who wants to wake up to a raw teabag? I don’t, especially when I am paying for ‘service’.

Our only hope is to hammer our irritation whenever and wherever we can and, if all else fails, restore that other, older saying-Take Our Custom (买卖) Elsewhere.

第36题:The author feels that nowadays customers are ________.

A) not worthy of special treatment

B) not provided with proper service

听力原文:M: Betty, you speak several languages, don't you?

W: Yes, I speak Spanish and French.

M: And what helped you most in learning those languages?

W: What helped me most... Well, I studied both languages in high school, and I'm still studying Spanish here at the university, but I think that travel has probably been the most help to me. You see, I've been lucky in that I've lived in Europe. Believe me, I didn't speak very well before I moved there.

M: You're right, Betly. After studying a language, practice is very useful. When you live in a country where the language is spoken, it's ideal. But, you know, some times it's difficult to make friends in a new place, even when the people are very friendly.

W: Yes, I know what you mean. Especially if you don't speak my language too well. I bad some problems when I first moved to Europe.

M: And, of course, some people are shy.

W: That's true.

M: Betty, whether or not I'm living in a country where the language is spoken, I always go to movies, and whenever I can, I watch TV or listen to the radio in the language I'm trying to learn.

W: Me too. And reading is another good way to learn. Books axe good, but I think that newspapers and magazines are even better.

M: So do I But I don't believe that it's possible to take advantage of practice opportunities without some knowledge of the language first.

W: Sine. First it's a good idea to study grammar, vocabulary.

M: ... and listening, perhaps even reading.

W: Then practice is very, very, helpful.
