听力原文:Many teachers believe that the responsibility for learning lies with the students

听力原文: Many teachers believe that the responsibility for learning lies with the students. If a long reading assignment is given, instructors expect students to be familiar with the information in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class or on a given examination. The ideal student is considered to be one who is motivated to learn for the sake of learning, not the one interested only in getting high marks.

When research is assigned, the professor expects the student to take the initiative and to complete the assignment with minimal guidance. It is the student's responsibility to find books, periodicals, and articles in the library. Professors do not have the time to explain how a university library works; they expect students, particularly graduate students, to be able to exhaust the reference sources in the library.

Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students not be overly dependent on them. In the United States, professors have other duties besides teaching. Often they are responsible for administrative work within their departments. In addition, they may be obliged to publish articles and books. Therefore, the time a professor can spend with a student outside of class is limited. If a student has problems with classroom work, the student should either approach a professor during office hours or make an appointment.

(30)

听力原文: At the start of the Middle Ages in Europe, there were no schools, as we know them today. There were no grade schools or high schools. There were no universities where young men could learn professions such as law or medicine. The only schools were in churches or monasteries. Except for some priests and monks, few people could read or write.

As time went on, many young men needed an education so they could learn a profession. In order to get an education, they had to be taught by teachers in a church school.

Some churchmen became known as great teachers. Wherever there was a great teacher, young men gathered to live and study. Then other teachers came to teach the subjects they knew best. A center of learning was formed.

Around A.D. 1100, a famous center of learning grew up around the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, France. A well-known teacher named Peter Abelard was there. Thousands of students came to Paris from all over Europe. Many teachers came too, and gave classes of their own.

Sometime between A.D. 1150 and A.D. 1170, the teachers formed a group that was much like a union. This group became the University of Paris. The University of Paris was one of the early universities. It had many teachers who taught different subjects, and it served as a model for other such universities.

(23)

A.High schools.

B.Universities.

C.Churches or monasteries.

D.Grade schools.

听力原文: Today school children in many countries have high rates of falling eye-sight. Two methods have been proposed to prevent near-sightedness, one Western and one Chinese. The Western method was developed by Mr. Bates, a British actor, in the early part of this century. He trained people to relax their eyes frequently during a period of intense reading. His methods included covering open eyes with the palms of the hands and looking at distant objects by moving the eyes from side to side instead of staring at them. Bates also encouraged school children to look frequently at a calendar on the wall of the classroom to relax their eyes. A famous British writer even wrote a book on the beneficial effects of the Bates method for his vision.

The traditional Chinese method involves pressing certain points around the eyes with fingers. This also relaxes excessive tension in eye muscles. It is best done by doctors trained in traditional Chinese medicine, but it can also be done by students themselves.

Teachers and parents should encourage pupils to relax their eyes frequently while reading and studying.

When the news spread, farmers, lawyers, sailors, soldiers and school teachers rushed to California by what ever means they could. Within a ear, 100.000 people only 8,000 of whom were women had reached the coast of California. More than half of them had traveled overland across the American continent. "Gold fever" began to spread. Settlements throughout the United States were deserted. Homes, farms and stores were abandoned as everybody raced for California. Many came by sea, and in July 1850 more than 500 ships were anchored in San Francisco Bay, many of which had been deserted by gold-hungry sailors. A few people became very rich, but it was a risky business. Law and order broke down, Even if a miner "struck it rich" , there were always those who would try to take it away: gamblers, outlaws, and thieves. Gold and silver were discovered in Nevada a few years later, and "gold fever" was an important part of the colonization of the western United States.

听力原文:Articles in magazines and newspapers and special reports on radio and television

听力原文: Articles in magazines and newspapers and special reports on radio and television reflect the concern of many Americans about the increasing dropout rate in our junior and senior high schools. Coupled with this fact is the warning that soon we will no longer have workforce to fill the many jobs that require properly-educated personnel. The highest student dropout rate is not a recent development. Ten years ago, many urban schools were reporting dropout rates between 35 and 50 percent. Some administrators maintain that dropouts remain the single greatest problem in their schools. Consequently, much effort has been spent on identifying students with problems in order to give them more attention before they become failures. Since the dropout problem doesn't start in senior high school, special programs in junior high school focus on students who show promise but have a record of truancy, that is, staying away from school without permission. Under the guidance of counselors, these students are placed in classes with teachers who have had success in working with similar young people. Strategies to motivate students in high school include rewarding academic excellence by designating scholars of the month, or by issuing articles of clothing such as school letter jackets formally given only to athletes. No one working with these students claims to know how to keep all students in school. Counselors, teachers, and administrators are in the frontlines of what seems at times to be a losing battle. Actually, this problem should be everyone's concern, since uneducated, unemployed citizens affect us all.

(30)

A.It may produce an increasing number of idle youngsters.

B.It may affect the quality of higher education in America.

C.It may cause many schools to go out of operation.

D.It may lead to a lack of properly educated workers.

听力原文: There are three groups of English learners: beginners, intermediate learners and learners of special English. Beginners need to learn the basis of English. Students who have reached an intermediate level benefit from learning general English skills. But what about the students who want to learn special English for their work or professional life? Most students who fit the third group have a clear idea of what they want to learn. A bank clerk, for example, wants to use the special English vocabulary and technical terms of finance. But for teachers, deciding how to teach special English is not so easy. For a start, the variety is enormous. Every field, from air pilots to secretaries, has its own vocabulary and technical terms. Teachers also need to have an up-to-date knowledge of that special language and not many teachers are exposed to working environments outside the classroom. These issues have influenced the way special English is taught in schools. This type of course is usually known as English for specific purposes or ESP and there is ESP course for almost every area of professional and working life. In Britain, for example, there are courses which teach English for doctors, lawyers, reporters, travel agents and people working in the hotel industry. By far, the most popular ESP courses are for business English.

(33)

A.They want to change the way English is taught.

B.They learn English to find well-paid jobs.

C.They want to have up-to-date knowledge of English.

D.They know clearly what they want to learn.

听力原文: As you prepare to become elementary school teachers, you'll be hearing a lot of discussions about the relevance of teaching penmanship. Now years ago when I was studying education in college, reading, writing and arithmetic were the basics of elementary school education. It went without saying that writing meant first and foremost penmanship. That is, the neatness of a child's handwriting. It was considered so important that sometimes prizes were even awarded for the best handwriting. But when we move ahead a few decades into the 1980s, we see teachers and administrators and even parents telling us that teaching penmanship is a waste of time. With computers, they said, children can successfully manipulate the keyboard or mouse of their home computers before they can even hold a pencil.

This change in attitude had an impact on the classroom. In your homework for this week you'll be looking at what statewide curricular standards in the US say about penmanship. You'll see that in many states penmanship has been deemphasized in a required curriculum, especially in the later years of elementary school. In California, for example, the curriculum calls for fourth-grade students to... and I quote, "write fluently and legibly in cursive or grades." But after this, the curriculum makes no further mention of penmanship in Grades Five, Six or beyond. Any higher level of quality or neatness is simply not among the curricular objectives. Your assignment is to look at what the curricular standards for all fifty states say about penmanship.

(33)

A.It's now taught with the aid of computers.

B.It isn't considered as important today as it was in the past.

C.Children today learn it earlier than those did in the past.

D.A lot of time is spent teaching it.
