听力原文:W: May I help you?
M: Do you sell alarm clocks in this department store?
W: Yes, we have a wide selection. What exactly did you have in mind?
M: I would like an alarm clock that will awaken me with soft music.
W: In that ease, you'll probably be interested in this handsome electric clock radio in a walnut cabinet.
M: Actually, I'd like a small battery-operated clock radio in a plastic case.
W: Here's a model that should suit you perfectly.
M: Yes, that's just what I had in mind. Can I use my credit card to pay for it?
W: I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept credit cards in this store. The manager doesn't believe in them.
M: Then can you direct me to a store that carries this same model radio but also accepts credit cards?
W: You could try the appliance store on Dawson Street.
M: Thank you for your help. I'll see if the store you recommended has what I want.

M: He really should try to gain some weight. He's probably not eating enough. Have you talked to him about it?
W: Yes, but well...Noticed Tim?
M: Oh, he has us worried, too. He has really been getting much too fat. He needs to lose about 70 pounds now.
W: Yeah. That's a lot of weight to lose. But if he keeps eating too much cake and candy, there's no way to...
M: Well, he should go on a diet. Eat more vegetables and fruits, less sweets and meat.
W: I keep telling him to, but he doesn't listen to me.
M: Maybe Mark should talk to him.
W: Maybe. Did I tell you that Mark needs two packs of cigarettes a day?
M: Hmmm, that's probably why he's so thin. You know, if he gave up, he would gain weight. I know he would. I put on a lot of weight when I stopped years ago.
W: Yes, we should try to persuade him to stop. But Tim has another problem—even worse. He drinks soda. Soda for lunch, dinner, after dinner.
M: Well, Mark never likes that. I think Tim does need exercise.
W: But he's so lazy, never plays any sports. And whenever I tell him to take a walk, he just gets angry.
M: Mark doesn't exercise, either. He just works so hard. No time to exercise or relax. I wish he could find a nice girlfriend to relax and have fun with.
W: Tim has a girlfriend. But she can't cook!
M: Well, they're 30-year-old boys, and they just don't think they need our advice anymore.

听力原文: Watching movies is a good way to improve your listening: I would stress the usefulness of repetition. So watch a DVD of an English-language film with Chinese subtitles. Then,a week or so later, watch the film again with the subtitles covered up.This time, you will know broadly what the characters are trying to say, which will help your brain link the English words with their meanings.Of course, you can pause and rewind the film if there are certain bits that really puzzle you.
The next step would be to find a way to listen to the soundtrack of the film without watching it.You should know the scenes and the story well by now,so by removing the pictures your brain will really focus on the language spoken.
Before you do any of this, think carefully about what film you want to use to practice your listening. If you want to learn American English,be sure to watch a film set in the USA.If you choose a really well-regarded film, one that has won lots of Academy Awards, for example, you will probably be able to buy the screenplay of the film, which will be very useful to you.
Lastly, choose a film that you are not going to get tired of if you watch it three times!
This is a very satisfying way to practice your listening. You will really feel that you are improving.

W: 75 pounds? That's a lot of weight to lose. What does Tim eat?
M: I really don't know. But I am sure he is eating too much cake and candy. I keep telling him, "Tim, dear, you will just have to eat more fruit and less candy." He doesn't listen to me. Maybe Marc should talk to him.
W: Well, maybe. Oh, did I tell you he's decided to be a vegetarian? That has me very worried. He only eats vegetables and fruit.
M: Marc doesn't eat any meat? That's probably why he's so thin! Does he smoke?
W: Does he smoke? About two packs of cigarettes a day. That's my son—a smoking vegetarian.
M: Marc smokes two packs a day? Hmmm, you know, if he stopped smoking he would Rain weight. I know he would. Tim put on a lot of weight when he stopped smoking. But Tim has another problem—even worse. He drinks soda. Soda for lunch. Soda for dinner. Does Marc drink it?

The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was quoting a Biblical(圣经的) passage about husbands being thoughtful of their wives. Then he went on to say, "Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love." To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change.
And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said, "That new yellow sweater looks great on you.
"Oh, Tom, you noticed," she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled.
After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I thought, "Evelyn's been alone here with the kids all week and now she wants to be alone with me." We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites.
So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm where I am a director; a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that' s how the whole vacation passed. I made a new pledge to keep on remembering to choose love.
There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression.
"What s the matter. I asked her.
"Tom," she said in a voice filled with distress, "do you know something I don't?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well... that checkup(体检) I had several weeks ago.., our doctor.., did he tell you something about me? Tom, you’ve been so good to me... am I dying?"
It took a moment for it all to sink in. Then I burst out laughing.
"No, honey," I said, wrapping her in my arms. "You' re not dying; I' m just starting to live."
In the first paragraph, "No ifs, ands or buts" probably means"______."
A.unintentionally
B.inevitably
C.impressively
D.unconditionally
