听力原文: During a state of deep relaxation, several physiological changes take place in the body: the body's oxygen consumption is reduced; the heart beat decreases; muscle tension and sweating ease, and there is decreased sympathetic nervous system activity. (32) This restful state not only allows the body to repair and restore itself but it has a calming effect on the consciousness. How to achieve this state of relaxation, however, is a matter of opinion. (33) A recent report by Dr. David Holmes of the University of Kansas in the journal American Psychologist said that simple sitting in an armchair has just as many beneficial characteristics for the body as meditation does. Researchers of other relaxation techniques disagree . (34) These experts believe that more structured techniques, such as meditation, lead to a condition of deep relaxation. The debate goes on, but one thing appears to be clear: the relaxation response can be reached by a number of methods, and the methods themselves are not as important as getting there. One day, one method may work best; on another day, an alternative method may be more appropriate. (35) Once you are aware of all the methods, you can find the one that works best for you. Some of the relaxation techniques are meditation, self-analysis and progressive muscle relaxation. Although these techniques may not, in the end, produce more of a relaxation response than just sitting quietly in a chair, (35) they have the added benefit of structure and discipline, and for these reasons appear to be more effective for most individuals.

32. What will happen when a person is in a state of deep "relaxation"?

33.What did Dr. David Holmes say about "relaxation" in American Psychologist?

34.What do the opponents of Dr. David Holmes believe?

35.What does the speaker think of "relaxation techniques" such as meditation?

(7)

A.The body will take in more oxygen.

B.The heart will beat more frequently.

C.Muscles will become tense and the body will sweat easily.

D.The consciousness will become more or less calmed.

听力原文: "High tech "and "state of the art" are two expressions that describe very modern technology. High tech is just a shorter way of saying high technology. And high technology describes any invention, system or device that uses the newest ideas or discoveries of science and engineering.

What is high tech? A computer is high tech. So is a communications satellite. A modern manufacturing system is surely high tech.

High tech became a popular expression in the United States during the early 1980's. Because of improvements in technology, people could buy many new kinds of products in American stores, such as home computers, microwave ovens, etc.

"State of the art" is something that is as modern as possible. It is a product that is based on the very latest methods and technology. Something that is "state of the art" means the newest possible design or product of a business or industry. A state of the art television set, for example, uses the most modern electronic design and parts. It is the best that one can buy.

"State of the art" is not a new expression. Engineers have used it for years, to describe the best and most modern way of doing something.

Millions of Americans began to use the expression in the late 1970's. The reason was the computer revolution. Every computer company claimed that its computers were "state of the art".

听力原文: The United Kingdom will seek a closer tie with China in its bid to make the country one of the leading business partner in the world of economic globalization, a senior trade official has said. "China, with its massive influence in global trade, is of great importance to U.K.'s trade and industry, which is trying to attract a new wave of high-value investment," Alistair Darling, Britain's Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, said in the weekend before his visit to China. Darling, who will visit Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, is on his first ever trip to China's mainland. Darling, who will lead a 15-strong delegation, said that Sino-British trade ties will be strengthened through mutual investment, not only trade.

The U.K., whose manufacturing industry has shrunk much during its economic structure readjustment in the past decades, finds that it has opportunities in helping China in fields like environment protection and power plant building. The British Trade and Industry leader said that globalization provides a tremendous opportunity for both the U.K. and China in which both countries could cooperate to curb climate change and improve bilateral trade. Darling was appointed Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, replacing Alan Johnson in the government reshuffle in May.

(30)

C.Britain's Secretary of State for Investment.

听力原文:Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive? When someone tells you somet

听力原文: Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.

For example, someone might say, "I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!"

This guy's a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought $200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. He's really a big loser!

He didn't say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That's called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.

Some politicians often use this trick. Let's say that during Governor Smith's last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents says, "During Governor Smith's term, the state lost one million jobs!" That's true. However, an honest statement would have been, "During Governor Smith's term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs."

Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It's against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, "Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache." It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.

This kind of deception happens too often. It's a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

33. How much did the lottery winner lose?

34. What does the speaker believe people should do?

35. What can we know from the example of the Yucky Pill advertisement?

(30)

A.One hundred dollars.

B.Two hundred dollars.

C.Three hundred dollars.

D.Four hundred dollars.

听力原文: Over the past decade, the environmental movement has exploded onto the minds of mainstream consumers, a fact not lost on marketers and advertisers. Green advertising started in the mid-1980s when issues of the environment muscled their way to the forefront of marketing. Advertisers saw the consumer desire for environmentally safe products and tried to meet the demand as quickly as possible. Not surprisingly, this first wave suffered from rough and poorly conceived marketing efforts. Many advertisers embraced a genuine concern for the environment. But consumers realized that some companies made false claims and exploited the movement, using such ambiguous terms as "environmentally friendly" and "green." Consumers grew wary of environmental appeals, and advertisers reacted by reducing its emphasis. In 1992 the Federal Trade Commission established guidelines, for green marketing, followed shortly by state governments. California Passed particularly: strict laws, setting definitions for terms like "ozone friendly", "biodegradable", and "recycled". According to the state's court, "California seeks to guard against potentially inaccurate claims or ecological boost about products with minimal environmental attributes." Texas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Tennessee, Connecticut, and Washington soon followed the Golden State's lead. The rigid regulations have left a number of advertisers confused and frustrated, although some feel that environmental claims have already peaked and are on their way out, Some believe that we've now entered green advertising's third wave, during which environmental concern is part of the mainstream, too.

听力原文: In this lesson, I want to talk about the history of The White House. At first, most Americans didn't think there was anything particularly special about the White House. Few had ever seen it or had any idea what it looked like, and even the families who lived there found it completely inadequate. When it was built, the White House was the largest house in the country and it remained so until after the Civil War. But it served so many different purposes that little of it was available for the First Family to actually live in. The first floor, or "State Floor" was made up entirely of public rooms; and the president's offices, which where staffed by as many as 30 employees, took half of the second floor up. The First Family had to get by with the eight or fewer second-floor rooms that were left. By Lincoln's time, the situation was intolerable. The White House was open to visitors; office seekers, and the merely curious had no difficulty making their way upstairs from the official rooms on the first floor. Lincoln was so uncomfortable with the situation that he had a private corridor constructed. He also received a $ 20, 000 appropriation to improve the furnishings of the White House. The new furnishings did not last for more than a few years. When Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, the White House fell into disarray. No one really supervised the White House during' the first five weeks.
