听力原文: A few months ago, millions of people in London heard alarms all over the town. Emergency services, the Fire Department, the Police, hospitals. And ambulances stood by, ready to go into action. In railway and underground stations, people read notices and maps, which told them where to go and what to do in an emergency. This was Exercise Flood Call, to prepare people for a flood emergency. London wasn't flooded yet, but it is possible that it would be. In 1236 and in 1663, London was badly flooded. In 1928, people living in Westminster, the heart of London, drowned in floods. And in 1953, one hundred people, living on the eastern edge of the London suburbs were killed again in floods. At last, Greater London Council took action to prevent this disaster from happening again. Though a flood wall was built in the 1980s, Londoners still must be prepared for the possible disaster. If it happens, 50 underground stations will be under water. Electricity, gas and phone services will be out of action. Roads will be submerged. It will be impossible to cross any of the bridges between North and South London. Imagine: London will look like the famous Italian city, Venice. But this Exercise Flood Call didn't cause panic among Londoners. Most people knew it was just a warning. One lady said, "It's a flood warning, isn't it? The water doesn't look nigh to me."

A.The heart of London was flooded.

B.An emergency exercise was conducted.

C.100 people in the suburbs were submerged.

第7题
Winston Churchill was one of the great men of his age. To show their respect for him,
the British lawmakers asked a fine artist, Graham Sutherland, to paint Winston Churchill's picture. When it was completed, it was presented to him, at a grand affair in the Westminster Hall, at the House of Commons.

It was reported in the newspapers to show that Churchill accepted the gift. He described the painting as "a remarkable example of modern art", which drew loud laughter.

In fact he was unhappy with the painting. Sutherland later reported that he asked whether it was to be painted in with a "happy" or "fierce" attitude. "Fierce," replied Churchill. At the time, Churchill was coming to the end of his political life and was unhappy that people wanted him to end his career.

Some twenty years later it was revealed that Lady Churchill hated the painting so much that she had it destroyed. "It was preying on (折磨) his mind," she was reported as saying.

A leading art critic was asked what he thought about the matter. He said he could understand Lady Churchill and had pity on her. Graham Sutherland is a very honest artist, who could only paint what he saw. At the time it was painted, Churchill was an old man, worried by the thought that he would have to end his political career soon. But Lady Churchill shouldn't have had the painting destroyed. It could have been stored away until after their deaths.

听力原文: London is a city sitting on a meandering river, with palaces overlooking barges sailing on the clear water of the Thames. Each year the Cambridge and Oxford boat race is run on the river. Such a boat has eight oarsmen, each using an oar of 3.7 metres. A trained crew can work up great speed and shoot away like a rocket. The victor of the race is front-page news of the evening paper.

Many bridges span the Thames in London. Of these the most famous is probably the Westminster Bride. If you hap- pen to be in London one of these days, do take a look from that bridge. On your right you will see the House of Commons and the House of Lords, and the Big Ben, which strikes every quarter of the hour. In the busy traffic on the bridge, you will notice the red double-decker buses, which roll past quite smoothly in spite of their huge bodies. Two bridges, the Waterloo Bridge and the London Bridge, are visible in the distance.

Fifty years ago London suffered from smoke and fog. Londoners called it pea-soup fog, because it looked so thick. Today the smog is gone, and the air remains clean, and fish has returned to the Thames, thanks to the Clean Air Act and other measures.

(33)

A.A narrow river.

B.The River Thames.

C.A wide river.

D.The Oxford River.
