听力原文:M: Ozone is an extremely active gas comprised of three atoms of oxygen. Ozone exi

sts naturally in the Earth's upper atmosphere, the stratosphere, where it shields the Earth from the sun's ultraviolet rays. However, ozone found close to the Earth's surface, called ground-level ozone, is a component of smog and a harmful substance.

W: What is the ground-level ozone? Where does it come from?

M: Ground-level ozone is a colorless gas that can be found in the air we breathe. It is formed through a complex chemical reaction between volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides in the presence of sunlight. It is hard to be watched by eyes.

W: Who is considered most at risk from exposure to ground-level ozone?

M: Children are the most at risk from exposure to ground-level ozone: Their respiratory systems are still developing and they breathe more air per pound of body weight than adults.

W: From what you've just said, can I infer that ground-level ozone is closely related to summer, the hot days?

M: Ground-level ozone is a summer time problem; children spend most of the summer outside playing at summer camps, playgrounds, and neighborhood parks and in backyards.

W: How do I know when ground-level ozone concentrations are high?

M: Ground-level ozone concentrations tend to be especially high during summer when the weather is hot and sunny.

W: Is there any organization providing relevant information?

M: The staff from the departments concerned has developed a procedure to inform. the public about expected ground-level ozone readings. Each afternoon from May 1st through September 15th, the staff retrieve and review monitored ozone data and weather forecast information. Then they develop ground-level ozone forecasts for the following day.

(23)

A.It exists close to the surface of the Earth.

B.It is a component of smog and a harmful substance.

C.It is a kind of yellow gas.

D.It is formed through a complex reaction.

听力原文:W: Hello?

M: Hi, May, this is Bill Johns.

W: Oh hi, Bill. You weren't in engineering class today, were you?

M: I have the flu. I was wondering if you could tell me what went on.

W: Actually we had an interesting class. Dr. Collin talked about a new type of fuel.

M: Oh, yeah?

W: Uh-hum. It's called DME.

M: Oh, I remember reading something about DME. It's mostly used in spray cans, right?

W: Right. DME doesn't destroy the ozone, so it's been environmentally friendly.

M: But doesn't DME pollute the air if it's burned in an engine?

W: Dr. Collin says something about its exhausts being clear, that it doesn't release as much pollutant as diesel fuel. And he mentioned something about DME being more efficient than other alternative fuels.

M: When will it replace diesel fuel?

W: Not for a while. It's not economical to mass produce.

M: Well, thanks for the information. I guess I won't need to borrow your notes.

W: Well, maybe you should look at them. We are having a test next week.

M: Okay, could you give them to Mike Andrews? I think he is in your psychology class. He is my roommate.

W: Sure. I hope you're feeling better soon.

M: Thanks. Me too. Bye!

W: Bye!

(23)

A.Dr. Collin.

B.Spray cans.

C.A new type of fuel.

D.A test.

听力原文: Scientists in the United States have reported some good news about the ozone in the atmosphere. Recent findings suggest that the destruction of ozone by pollution is slowing. Ozone is a form. of oxygen. Its presence above Earth protects us from radiation from the sun.

In one study, researchers examined information gathered by NASA space agency satellites and by equipment on Earth and said the atmosphere was losing about eight percent of the ozone layer per ten- year period since the late 1970s. In the last five years, though, that rate of loss has dropped by half. The atmosphere should start to gain ozone before long. A full recovery, however, is about 50 years away, as long as the Montreal Protocol remains in place.

That is an international treaty from 1987 to restore the ozone layer. The treaty restricts the use of a number of chemicals that destroy ozone, like chlorofiuorocarbons, or C-F-C's. Wide use of C-F-C's began in the 1930s. They became popular coolants in devices such as refrigerators and air conditioners. C-F-C's remain in the atmosphere for years.

The Montreal Protocol also restricts the use of methyl bromide, a chemical to kill insects. Farmers and shippers are the main users. Natural sources of methyl bromide include oceans and some plants. Scientists say the bromine gas it produces is 50 times more destructive to ozone than chlorine gas from C-F-C's.

(30)

A.The destruction process of ozone layer is slowing down.

B.The ozone layer has been destroyed seriously.

C.Ozone layer can protect us from strong radiation from the sun.

D.Ozone is produced by waste gas.

听力原文: Over the past decade, the environmental movement has exploded onto the minds of mainstream consumers, a fact not lost on marketers and advertisers. Green advertising started in the mid-1980s when issues of the environment muscled their way to the forefront of marketing. Advertisers saw the consumer desire for environmentally safe products and tried to meet the demand as quickly as possible. Not surprisingly, this first wave suffered from rough and poorly conceived marketing efforts. Many advertisers embraced a genuine concern for the environment. But consumers realized that some companies made false claims and exploited the movement, using such ambiguous terms as "environmentally friendly" and "green." Consumers grew wary of environmental appeals, and advertisers reacted by reducing its emphasis. In 1992 the Federal Trade Commission established guidelines, for green marketing, followed shortly by state governments. California Passed particularly: strict laws, setting definitions for terms like "ozone friendly", "biodegradable", and "recycled". According to the state's court, "California seeks to guard against potentially inaccurate claims or ecological boost about products with minimal environmental attributes." Texas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Tennessee, Connecticut, and Washington soon followed the Golden State's lead. The rigid regulations have left a number of advertisers confused and frustrated, although some feel that environmental claims have already peaked and are on their way out, Some believe that we've now entered green advertising's third wave, during which environmental concern is part of the mainstream, too.

(33)

A.They were expensive.

B.No one believes them.

C.They were unsuccessful.

D.They were often deceptive.

听力原文:M: Doctor Cole, thank you for agreeing to this interview for the Daily Campus New
s. Can you tell us about what you and your colleagues discuss at the annual astronomy society meeting last month?

W: Yes. For the first time ever the scientific community has established the existence of planets outside our own solar system. Of course we knew that certain distant stars existed, but only recently did we learn that several of them are orbited by their own planets.

M: Why did it take so long to locate these planets?

W: Well, you have to understand that they are a billion times dimmer than their parent stars. It would be like trying to see the light of a candle next to a huge explosion. We don't currently have a telescope that can be used to see them.

M: But if the astronomers didn't see the planets through a telescope, how did they find them?

W: By a very indirect method. The astronomers measured subtle distortions in the frequency of the light from the parent stars and observed that some of the stars seem to rock back and forth. They determined that this was caused by gravitational pull from orbiting planets.

M: There is a powerful new telescope being built in Arizona. Will that help them see these planets?

W: They should be able to see them at least in the form. of small spots of light. And then the scientists will be able to break down and analyze this light. By doing this, they hope to learn about the chemical composition of these planets--oxygen and ozone molecules, for example, would be telltale signs of life on these planets.

M: I'm looking forward to hearing more when the telescope is in operation. And I'm sure our readers would be interested too.

(20)

A.The possible existence of life on other planets.

B.A technical problem that astronomers can't solve.

C.Methods for building powerful new telescopes.

D.The discovery of planets orbiting distant stars.

听力原文: Do you know that vegetables can be grown in climate they are not accustomed to? Cool climate vegetables are now able to be grown in places as hot as Hawaii.

In Hawaii, engineers have been able to actually make those vegetables live in cooler climates. That way they grow faster and taste better. What these engineers have been using is cold seawater. The temperature of seawater is much lower than the air temperature.

How do they use it? They placed pipes in the soil and the cold water flowing through them cools the earth. This stimulates plant growth and enables gardeners in tropical climates to grow crops from cooler climates.

Also, some of these pipes are exposed to the air and they make the moisture form. little water drops and thus irrigate the gardens. What is especially appealing about this process is that nothing damaging to the natural environment is being used.

Another innovative use for cold ocean water is to coal buildings. Engineers believe that, for example, the entire west coast of the United States could be air-conditioned using seawater.

We all know there are certain types of chemicals used in air conditioners, which not only pollute the air but also bring damage to the ozone. If we could cool the city by using seawater, the environment of the whole city will be improved and the ozone will be protected, which will be beneficial to ourselves in return.

(33)

A.Plants in Hawaii.

B.Uses for cold seawater.

C.Techniques for protecting environment.

D.The importance of saving energy.

听力原文: About 20,000 whales have been slaughtered since a ban on commercial whaling was introduced in 1986 and the death toll is rising each year. Norway and Japan killed over 1,000 whales in 1999 and they plan to kill even more. The International Whaling Commission (IWC) has failed to stop the killing and a compromise deal may relax the ban allowing coastal whaling condemning many thousands more whales to a cruel death. In 1994, the IWC created a whale refuge in Antarctic waters and many believed the battle to save the whales had been won. But Japan has ignored the refuge and along with Norway continues to defy the whaling ban. As the environmental concerns increase whaling is no longer the issue it was or deserves to be. With little public awareness of the increasing whale slaughter, there has been no pressure to stop it. Consequently, the political will to confront the whalers and enforce the whaling ban has slipped away. Commercial whaling has ruined whale populations worldwide, pushing the entire species to the brink of extinction. There is still great scientific uncertainty about the size and status of remaining whale populations. Whales are facing increasing threats to their survival including increasing toxic pollution, massive over-fishing, boat collisions, habitat loss, ozone exhaustion and climate change. They need to be protected, not hunted. Commercial whaling is surprisingly cruel and unnecessary. It is morally indefensible. It should be condemned to history, to a time when sadly we knew no better!

(30)

A.The impact of commercial whaling.

B.Why Japan and Norway continue to hunt whales.

C.The inaction of the IWC.

D.The immorality of commercial whaling.
