Jazz captures the essence of America, for in jazz all of the American characteristics come together. The solos are a(26)ofindividual brilliance that can"t take place without these group efforts of the rhythm section. Beyond that, jazz has a connection to theessence of America in a much more(27)way. It is an expression of the African roots of American culture and a musicalmedium that(28)the culture of the Africans whose culture came to(29)much of what is American.

Jazz brought together elements from Africa and Europe,(30)them into a new culture and an expression unique to theAmericans. Out of this fusion came an idea that Americans believe it"s central to their identity: tolerance. Americans(31)that cultural diversity is their strength. They learn every day that other cultures and peoples may make valuable contributions to their wayof life. Jazz music is the embodiment of these ideals, combining elements from African and European cultures into a(32)American music. Jazz reflects two contradictory facets of American life. On the one hand, it is a team effort, where every musicianis completely(33)what the group does together, listening to each of the other players and building on their contributions tocreate a musical whole. On the other hand, the band features a soloist who is an individual(34), a genius like Charlie Parkerwho explores musical(35)whers no one has ever gone before. In the same sense, American life is also a combination ofteamwork and individualism and a combination of individual brilliance with the ability to work with others.

听力原文:W: I know your company was one of the biggest American corporations to take the i
dea of customer services seriously...

M: Yes, urn, I think you can say we were among the pioneers.

W: So, with the experience of many years of trying to get it right, what would you define as the most important elements in providing successful customer services?

M: Mm... well, that's quite a difficult question, because so many factors are absolutely vital if you want to succeed, and success with the customer services, I might add, means doing everything you possibly can to please and keep customers.

W: Does that include the old idea that, for a company, the customer is always right?

M: Not exactly. The slogan that the customer is always right is rather simple, and unrealistic. I would say that, instead, the most important aim of a customer services unit is to encourage communication with customers, to actively seek feedback, including complaints, and to acknowledge all comments, good and bad, from customers because people like to be treated with respect.

W: Then what do you think are the most important factors for a company's success?

M: It seems to me that a company's success, in terms of good reputation and high profits, depends more on the relationship the company establishes with the customers. That relationship involves the company in consistently providing high-quality products and top-quality services.

W: So what you're saying is, in fact, very simply--basically, keeping customers happy depends on providing quality and encouraging communication.

M: Yes, but the essential factor is communication. A successful customer dervices unit is one that acts as a link between the company and the customer to ensure that the company can respond to the needs of the customer. After all, a company's success can only come from a satisfied customer.

(20)

A.Providing high-quality products for customers.

B.Providing good services for customers.

C.Doing everything you can to please and keep customers.

D.Establishing dialogues with the customers.

听力原文:M: I'd like to share with you today my experience with a new approach to building
a house. It's called Envelop Building.

W: Hmm, it sounds interesting. Please share with us. What does it mean?

M: Essentially, what it means is that as you are building a house, you try to leave the landscape feature on the land, especially the vegetation in the original condition. So what you are not doing is the usual practice of "land scraping". By which I mean literally scraping or cleaning the land of any and all the original plants.

W: Why is the approach called Envelop Building?

M: Good question! Because instead of clearing everything away, you let your original landscape elements envelop or surround your house. Let the vegetation physical features such as hills and slopes or interesting rock formations, constitute a significant part of the character of the building site. The design of the house should take these features of the land into account.

W: Any more information about Envelop Building? Is it a recent technology?

M: Actually, integrating your original wild landscape with a house is not that new. The famous American architect Wright was doing it about 65 years ago. Envelop Building is not as easy as it sounds though. It's not just that you build your house and leave the land alone. By building, you are already damaging the original landscape. But as architects, we should try to work with environment, not against it. A creative architect can find ways to incorporate natural landscape into the overall design.

W: I guess this technology will be acknowledged by more architects.

(23)

A.Eliminating the original vegetation from the building site.

B.Making the houses in an area similar to one another.

C.Deciding where a house will be built.

D.Surrounding a building with wildflowers and plants.

Focus on what you do best. This age-old strategy has worked well for RealNetworks, Microso
ft's main competitor in multimedia software for the Internet. Now, the smaller Seattle-based firm is trying a novel way to contain the software giant. On October 29th, it released the underlying recipe, or source-code, of its RealPlayer software and will soon do the same for its other programs — giving away a big chunk of its intellectual property.

This may sound like a desperate echo of 1998, when Netscape, struggling in Microsoft's choke holding, published the source-code of its web browser (an initiative that yielded few real results until this June, when the first serious new version of the open-source browser, Mozilla, was released). Yet RealNetworks is not playing defense. It is trying to encourage the creation of a common multimedia software structure for every kind of file format and device, thus defeating Microsoft's ambitions in this promising market.

The firm hopes that others in the industry (volunteer programmers, media firms and hardware makers) will take the code, called Helix DNA, improve it and make it run on new devices, such as mobile phones and home stereos, turning RealNetworks' software into an industry standard. Clever licensing terms are supposed to ensure that this standard does not split and that the firm still makes money.

Individual developers, universities and other non-profit organizations can modify the software as they please, and even redistribute it for free, so long as they also publish the source-code for their changes. This is a sort of payment in kind, for RealNetworks is then allowed to use these contributions. Firms, on the other hand, must pay royalty fees if they distribute more than lm copies of the code. They also have to make sure that their software works with other Helix DNA products. The software's development community already has 2,000 members. And several hardware makers hack the effort. But there are risks. Afraid of piracy (盗版), media groups are suspicious of anything that might be related to hackers (although they also do not want to depend on, and pay for, technology controlled by Microsoft). The self-created competition could also hurt RealNetworks if customers decide its commercial products, which will ha based on the open source-cede but with extra features, are not worth paying extra for.

RealNetworks' move is another sign that the software industry is going hybrid. Mixing elements of proprietary software, where the source-code is tightly controlled, with open-source programs enables firms to expand a market, harvest the ideas of others and, they hope, still make money. Even Microsoft is edging this way: it recently announced that partners can now look at — but not modify or re-use — the source-code for Passport, its controversial digital-identity service.

By what way does RealNetworks attempt to prevent Microsoft's ambitions?

A.Publishing the source code.

B.Using RealNetworks' achievements.

C.Protecting intellectual property.

D.Accusing of Microsoft.

The forest from which Man takes his timber is the tallest and most impressive plant commun
ity on Earth. In terms of Man's brief life it appears permanent and unchanging, save for the seasonal growth and fall of the leaves, but to forester it represents the climax of a long succession of events.

No wooded landscape we see today has been forest for all time. Plants have minimum requirements of temperature and moisture and, in ages past, virtually every part of Earth's surface has at some time been either too dry or too cold for plants to survive. However, as soon as climatic conditions change in favour of plant life, a fascinating sequence of changes occurs, called a primary succession.

First to colonize the barren land are the lowly lichens, surviving on bare rock. Slowly, the acids preduced by these organisms crack the rock surface, plant debris accumulates, and mosses establish a shallow root-hold. Ferns may follow and, with short grasses and shrubs, gradually form. a covering of plant life. Roots probe even deeper into the developing soil and eventually large shrubs give way to the first trees. These grow rapidly, cutting off sunlight from the smaller plants, and soon establish complete domination-closing their ranks and forming a climax community which may endure for thousands of years.

Yet even this community is not everlasting. Fire may destroy it outright and settlers may cut it down to gain land for pasture or cultivation. If the land is then abandoned, a secondary succession will take over, developing nmch faster on the more hospitable soil. Shrubs and trees are among the early invaders, their seeds carried by the wind, by birds and lodged in the coats of mammals.

For as long as it stands and thrives, the forest is a vast machine, storing energy and many elements essential for life.

What does the forest strike mankind as permanent?

A.The trees are in community.

B.The forest is renewed each season.

C.Man's life is short in comparison.

D.It is an essential part our lives.
