听力原文: Amy Johnson was a very ambitious and energetic person. She didn't have much in common with other girls in her school, however. She played football better than most boys, and unfortunately she made a rather bad impression on many of her teachers. Amy just didn't act the way they thought a girl should. She studied at a university and later took a job as a typist. Although she was enthusiastic and did her best, she made a lot of mistakes and was poorly paid. She didn't want to be a typist anyway -- she dreamed of becoming a pilot!

Amy moved to London, borrowed some money, and learned to fly. Nobody, however, wanted to hire a female pilot. She decided to fly alone to Australia to prove that she could fly as well as any man. Her parents lent her money to buy an airplane.

Amy set off on May 5,1930. Her route took over Vienna, Constantinople, and Baghdad. She was caught in a sandstorm and had to make an emergency landing in the desert. But she landed in India six days later. She had broken the record to India by two days. Over Burma, she ran into a monsoon, and was able to save herself only by landing on a football field. She finally reached Australia. The plane propeller had been broken during her last landing, and she had to crash-land. But Amy had proved that she could fly -- and that a woman could do almost anything she really put her mind to.

(33)

A.Because she played football better than most boys.

B.Because she made a lot of mistakes though she did-her best.

C.Because she performed poorly in her studies.

D.Because she didn't act the way the teachers thought a girl should.

en. Could you let us know how you put this together?

W: This spring I took a square-foot gardening class, and I decided to try some of the things I've learned. Um, one of the most important things in square-foot gardening is that you choose a good location. You need at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunshine. You also need to choose a location that has good drainage, and it should be a convenient location. A garden is a lot more fun if you are walking by and seeing it all the time. Um, you need to decide what kind of containers you want, or, in my case, I used wooden boxes.

M: Well, Shirley, I've noticed these vertical beams. I've never seen that before. Could you explain that to us a little bit?

W: Right here we have some cantaloupe, and cantaloupe take a lot of space when you grow them out on the ground, and I don't have that much space, so I just grow them up. I just made a metal frame, and took some string. I just allow them to grow up, and they will support themselves.

M: This is amazing. I noticed in this garden, there is a vast amount of vegetation.

W: Well, over on the far end, I have tomatoes growing vertically. In front of those I have green peppers, basil, strawberries, beets, green beans, corn, carrots and so on. Right here, as I said before, I have cantaloupe. Down at the bottom, I have some Mexican tomatoes. And down at this end, I have eggplant, another kind of pepper called banana peppers, cucumbers, okra, pumpkins...and I think that's about it.

M: I'm so impressed. I'd tike to thank you very much for having us in today to look at your garden.

(23)

A.By attending a class.

B.From her parents.

C.Through a gardening magazine.

D.From her neighbors.

enty-seven years, he hid deep ill the jungles of Guam, a Pacific island battle site during the war. Shoichi stayed there, away from friends and foes alike, because he felt "shame and dishonor" after the war.

Shoichi knew that Japan had lost the war, but the humiliation of defeat kept him from surrendering. So he stayed in the jungle, living on what he could search out. He ate mostly insects, snails, frogs and rats.

In 1972, U.S. authorities finally convinced Shoichi to "surrender". He was sent back to his homeland. Shoichi's returning home attracted a lot of attention. When a department store in Tokyo exhibited his jungle clothes and tools, more than 350,000 curious people came to view them. After spending some time back in civilization, Shoichi met a forty-five years old widow. The old soldier and the widow fell in love and married. After their wedding, the couple took a honeymoon trip to the island of Guam.

(30)

A.The island of Guam.

B.The battles on Guam during World War II.

C.Yokoi Shoichi's marriage.

D.A Japanese soldier who hid on Guam.

听力原文: In today's class we'll be examining some nineteenth-century pattern books that were used for building houses. I think it's fair today that these pattern books were the most important influence on the design of North American houses during the nineteenth century.

This was because most people who wanted to build a house couldn't afford to hire an architect. Instead, they bought a pattern book, picked out a plan, and took it to the builder. The difference in cost was substantial. In 1870, for example, hiring an architect would have cost about a hundred dollars. At the same time, a pattern book written by an architect cost only five dollars.

At that price, it's easy to see why pattern books were so popular. Some are back in print again today, and of course they cost a lot more than they did a hundred years ago. But they're an invaluable resource for historians, and also for people who restore old houses. I have a modern reprint here that I’ll be passing around the room in a moment so that everyone can have a look.

(36)

A.Advice about landscaping.

B.Hints about saving to buy a house.

C.Photographs of the homes of famous people.

D.Plans for houses.
