听力原文: Some parts of the earth are more likely to have quakes than others. This is usually true of mountain areas, because there the thickness of rocks, which make up the earth's crust, is not even. But quakes may often be felt in level regions, too, because the waves, which come from the center of a quake, run often for thousands of miles.

It is easy to understand why man is so frightened by an earthquake. People used to think that when there was an earthquake, the ground opened, swallowed great numbers of people, then closed, and those who were killed disappeared forever. We know now this does not happen.

What we need to fear are the after-effects of a serious earthquake: fires, floods, and landslides. Since the Yellowstone earthquake some people have said that they would never go to that area for fear of being caught in a landslide occurring after the earthquake. This is, actually a foolish idea. Such a fear would keep us away from mountains the rest of our lives. Even though earthquakes happen every day something like the Madison River landslide does not happen very often. We can realize gratefully that few of us will suffer because of such a disaster. At the same time we can understand the need of being ready to help those who do suffer such trouble.

(33)

A.Because the waves coming from the center of a quake can spread to these places.

B.Because there are the thickness of rocks making up the earth's crust.

C.Because some parts of the earth are more likely to have quakes than others.

D.Because mountainous areas are easy to have earthquakes.

听力原文: A critical factor that plays a part in people's susceptibility to colds is age. The University of the Michigan School of Public Health has done a study that revealed some general rules for the public. It says that infants are the most cold-ridden group. On an average, infants will catch more than six colds during their early years. Besides, boys have more colds than girls when they are under the age of three. When they grow older than three years old, it is easier for girls to catch cold than the boys. Girls might catch three colds, while boys catch two on average.

Generally speaking, the incidents of colds continue to decline while people are growing older. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two colds every year. One exception is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infections. This is because people in this age group are most likely to have young babies. Adults who delay having children until their 30s and 40s experience the same sudden increase in cold infections.

The study also found that economics plays an important role. As income increases, the frequency at which colds are reported in the family decreases. Families with the lowest income suffer about a third more colds than families at the upper end. Lower income generally forces people to live in more limited space than those occupied by rich people, and crowding will increase the possibility of cold infections.

听力原文: Americans suffer from an overdose of work. Regardless of who they are or what they do. Americans spend more time at work than that any time since World War II. In 1950, the US had fewer working hours than any other industrialized country.

Today, it exceeds every country but Japan where industrialized employees load 2155 hours a year compared with 1951 in the US and 1603 in the former West Germany. Between 1969 and 1989, employed Americans add an average of 138 hours to their yearly work schedules. The workweek has remained above 40 hours. But people are working more weeks each year. Specifically pay time off holidays, vacations, sick leave shrank by 50% in the 1980s.

As corporations have experienced stiff (艰难的, 严酷的) competitions and slow in growth of productivity, they have pressed employees to work longer. Cost-cutting lay-offs in the 1980s reduce the professional and managerial runs, leaving fewer people to get the job done. In lower paid occupations where wages have been reduced, workers have added hours in overtime or extra jobs to preserve their living standards. The government estimates that more than 7 million people hold a second job.

For the first time, large numbers of people say they want to cut back(削减,减少) on working hours even it means earning less money. But most employers are unwilling to let them do so. The government which has stepped back from its traditional role as a regulator of work time should take steps to make shorter hours possible.

D.The U.K.

听力原文: Many people suffer from some form. of extreme anxiety. Some experience occasional attacks of panic for no apparent reason. Others go around in a state of continual uneasiness. The usual way of controlling anxiety is with drugs, which cure none of the conditions described but do help patients man age their anxiety. Patients who take these drugs say that they are able to work, to sleep, and to go to places they had feared to visit. But the effects of the drugs on the human body, especially on the nervous system, have been unknown.

We have started a series of studies to identify the effects of the drugs on the brain and have gained some insight into the costs and benefits of the anti anxiety drugs. They are valuable because they can reduce the effects of anticipated failure, frustration, and disappointment. But their value demands a price. Two effects of the drugs are obviously harmful. They reduce a person's ability to react to changes in the environment; and more important, they keep a person from developing persistence in the face of unexpected troubles. Since it is fairly sure that people will meet problems they had not expected, this effect may make the price of anti-anxiety drugs too high.

(30)

A.They help to cure anxiety.

B.They help patients to gain insight into the cause of anxiety.

C.They help to control anxiety.

D.They help patients to work efficiently.
