听力原文:M: Did you know that astronauts have made commercial products in space?

W: No, I wasn't aware of that. What kind of products?

M: Tiny plastic beads with a little hole through it.

W: Tiny balls? Do you mean to tell me that astronauts have nothing better to do than make jewelry beads in space? It seems to me they could make more useful things out there.

M: Oh, but these little balls aren't for jewelry. They can be used for scientific purposes to conduct cancer research .

W: That sounds better, but why make such objects in space rather than on earth?

M: Because earth gravitational pull affects the beads. They produced on earth are distorted, not exactly tumid. The ones made in space are precisely round.

W: Sounds reasonable.

ENGLISH, THE GLOBAL LANGUAGE

English is spoken as a native language by around 377 million people, and as a second language by around 375 million speakers in the world. Speakers of English as a second language will soon outnumber those who speak it as a first language. Around 750 million people are believed to speak English as a foreign language. English has an official or a special status in 75 countries with a total population of over 2 billion.

The domination of the English language globally is a sure thing. English is the language of international communications, business, tourism, education, science, computer technology, media and the Internet.

British colonialism in the 19th century and American capitalism and technological progress in the 20th century were undoubtedly the main causes for the spread of English throughout the world. From the fifteenth century, the British began to sail all over the world and became explorers, colonists and imperialists. They took the English language to many places. For the last hundred years, the USA has played a leading role in most parts of the world. The Hollywood film industry also attracted many foreign artists in quest of fame and fortune and the number of American films produced every year soon flooded the market.

However, the future of English as a global language will depend very largely on the political, economic, demographic and cultural trends in the world.

听力原文:W: Sir, you’ve been using the online catalogue for quite a while. Is there anythi
ng I can do to help you?

M: Well, I’ve got to write a paper about Hollywood in the 30s and 40s, and I’m really struggling. There are hundreds of book, and I just don’t know how to begin.

W: Your topic sounds pretty big. Why don’t you narrow it down to something like… uh, the history of the studios at that time.

M: You know, I was thinking about that, but more than 30 books come up when I typed in “Movie Studio”.

W: You could cut that down even further by listing the specific years you want. Try adding “1930s” or “1940s” or maybe “Golden Age”.

M: “Golden Age” is a good idea. Let me type it in… Hey, look, just 6 books this time. That’s a lot better.

W: Oh… another thing you might consider… have you tried looking for any magazine or newspaper article?

M: No, I’ve only been searching for books.

W: Well, you can look up magazine articles in the Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature. And we do have the Los Angeles Times available over there. You might go through their index to see if there’s anything you want.

M: Okay, I think I’ll get started with these books and then I’ll go over the magazines.

W: If you need any help, I’ll be over at the Reference Desk.

M: Great. Thanks a lot.
