听力原文:M: Good morning. Can I help you.'?

W: Hello. My name's Jane Bush and I'm intending to go to a conference in Sydney for three weeks. After the conference I've got two weeks' holiday and I wanted to go shopping or seeing Hong Kong or India or somewhere round there.

M: Yes.

W: Where exactly can I go?

M: Well, lots of places. There's Singapore or Teheran, Kuwait, Athens, you've really got quite a lot of choices you know.

W: Well, it sounds marvelous. How much would that cost?

M: The full fare? Well, that's really quite a lot. It's £ 12134.

W: Yes, a thousand two hundred and four. Well, it's once in a lifetime.

M: Mm.

W: The thing is, actually that I'm absolutely terrified of flying. I've never done it before.

M: Oh dear.

W: And I'm hoping that I can persuade my two friends, who are also going to the conference, to stop over with me on the way back.

M: Yes, that would be a good idea.

W: Mm, yes. By the way, one of them is in Cairo at the moment. Would it be possible for ne to stop over there on my way to Sydney?

听力原文: The quest for Success always begins with a target. As Yogi Berra once said, "You got to be very careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get them." Too many people wander through life like sleepwalkers. Each day they follow familiar routines, never asking, "What am I doing with my life?" And they don't know what they're doing because they lack goals.

Goal-setting is focusing on the will to move in a certain direction. Begin with a clear conception of what you want. Write down your goals and date them—put them into words clarifies them. Rather than concentrate on objects to acquire and possess, focus on fulfilling your desires to do, to produce, to contributegoal—setting that yields the true sense of satisfaction we all need.

It's important to visualize yourself accomplishing your goal. While losers visualize the penalties of failure, winners visualize the rewards of success. I've seen it among athletes, entrepreneurs and public speakers.

I've done it myself. I was terrified of air travel. I had read too many articles describing crash scenes and imagined these scenes vividly. Friends quoted statistics contrasting air and highway safety, but it made no difference. I had programmed myself, without realizing it, to stay off planes. Then one summer I had the opportunity to fly on a private plane with friends to a resort. I didn't want to miss out on a great vacation. So I spent two weeks imagining a smooth flight on a beautiful sunny day and an easy landing. When the day arrived, I was eager to go. To everyone's surprise, I got on the plane and flew. I loved every minute of it, and I still use the techniques I employed that day.

(23)

A.One needs to be careful with his goal.

B.Sleep walkers lack goals for success.

C.Success is impossible without a goal.

D.One's goal in lire is difficult to find.

When Elon Musk says, as he did this week, that his new priority is using artificial inte
lligence to build domestic robots, we should not only take note, but look forward to the day we can put our legs up in admiration.

Mr. Musk is a guy who gets things done. The founder of two “moonshot” tech companies, Tesla Motors and SpaceX, is bringing electric vehicles to mass market and 26 humans to live on other planets. Lest this strike the amateur techie—not that readers of The Independent would ever count among them—as so much hot air, you can be reassured that the near $13bn (£8.8bn) fortune this entrepreneur has 27 comes from practical achievements rather than hypothetical ones.

A lot of clever people are 28 about artificial intelligence, fearing that robots will one day become so 29 they’ll murder all of us. These fears are mostly 30 : as with hysteria about genetic modification, we humans are generally wise enough to manage these problems with alacrity and care.

And just think of how wonderful it would be if you had a live-in robot. It could — 31 — be like having a babysitter and masseuse rolled into one — or, if that required 32 intelligence beyond the ken of Mr. Musk’s imagined machine, at least some one to chop the carrots, wash the car and mow the lawn. Once purchased and trained, this would allow the 33 user to save money and time, freeing up 34 space in our busy lives to, for instance, read The Independent.

That is why we welcome Mr. Musk’s latest 35 , and wish him well. As long as robots add to the sum of human happiness, reduce suffering or cumbersome activity, and create time to read world-class journalism, The Independent will be their fans. Especially since journalism is one job robots will never do.
