听力原文:W: Welcome to our program, Tom.

M: Thank you.

W: Tom, how long have you been a police officer?

M: I've been a police officer for forty years.

W: Forty years. And you've had. different types of assignments on the police force, I guess.

M: Yeah, I've done everything from patrol to undercover work to detective work, and now I'm supervising investigations.

W: Tom I think most people would say that being a police officer is a very stressful job. Would you agree?

M: Yes, it's definitely a stressful assignment you can have.

W: So, what's probably the most stressful assignment you can have?

M: I'd say patrol is the most stressful assignment.

W: That's interesting! In what way?

M: Well, I guess the biggest part of the stress is the fear factor—the fear of the unknown.

W: What do you mean, Tom?

M: Well, in patrol work, you don't know from moment to moment who you are talking to or what their reaction is going to be to justify your presence. Let's say, for example, a patrol officer stops someone for a traffic violation. It seems as though that would be a very low-stress situation.

W: Yes, it is a very low-stress situation.

M: But the truth is, there are more police officers injured during a routine stop.

W: Really?

M: Really! That's why all police officers are taught from the very beginning to be aware of their surroundings. People back over policemen, people shoot policemen, and people jump out at policeman—different kinds of things. So that's probably the most stressful time.

W: I see. Let's take a break and then we'll move on to our next topic.

M: All right.

W: What? Did I do anything wrong?

M: License, please. And your car registration.

W: Oh, yeah. It's here somewhere in the glove compartment. Yeah, here it is.

M: Madame, did you realize you were speeding in a school zone?

W: What? No, I didn't, but that's probably because my odometer is broken, I mean, malfunctioning.

M: Yes, you were going 50 miles per hour in a 20 miles per hour zone. And, you failed to come to a complete stop at the intersection back there.

W: Rolling stops don't count?

M: And, one of your break lights is out, you're not wearing a seat belt, and your driver's license expired six months ago.

W: And your name is... Officer Smith? Hey, are you related to the Smiths in town? My husband's cousin's husband, I think his name is Fred, works for the police department here. Or is that the fire department? Anyway, I thought you might be good pals, and you know...

M: Hey, are you trying to influence an officer? I could have this car impounded right now because of these infractions.

听力原文: A wise man once said that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. So, as a police officer, I have some urgent things to say to good people.

Something has gone wrong with our once-proud American way of life. A key ingredient is disappearing: responsibility, which means that every person is responsible for his actions. Without it, there can be no respect, no law, and ultimately, no society. My job as a police officer is to impose responsibility on people who refuse to impose it on themselves. But as every policeman knows, controls on people's behavior. are far less effective than internal restrictions such as guilt, shame and embarrassment. Yet gradually, especially in our larger cities and suburbs, these inner restrictions are loosening. Your typical robber has none. He considers your property his property; he takes what he wants, including your life.

The main cause of this break-down is a radical shift in attitudes. Thirty years ago, if a crime was committed, society was considered the victim. Now it's the criminal who is considered victimized: by the school that didn't teach him to read, by the church that failed to reach him with moral guidance, by the parents who didn't provide a stable home. I don't believe it. Many others in equally disadvantaged circumstances choose not to engage in criminal activities. If we free the criminal from responsibility, we become a society of endless excuses. We desperately need more people who believe that the person who commits a crime is the one responsible for it.

(30)

A.Because good men are not as smart as the police.

B.Because good people have no sense of guilt.

C.Because good people have hardly done anything to prevent crimes.

D.Because good people commit more criminal activities recently.

第10题
A wise man once said that the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men
to do nothing. So, as a police officer, I have some urgent things to say to good people.

Days after clays my men and I struggle to hold back a tidal wave of crime. Something has gone terribly wrong with our once-proud American way of life. It has happened in the area of values. A key ingredient is disappearing, and I think I know what it is: accountability.

Accountability isn' t hard to define. It means that every person is responsible for his or her actions and liable for their consequences.

Of the many values that hold civilization together honesty, kindness, and so on accountability may be the most important of all. Without it, there can be no respect, no trust, no law and, ultimately, no society.

My job as a police officer is to impose accountability on people who refuse, or have never learned, to impose it on themselves. But as every policeman knows, external controls on people's behavior. are far less effective than internal restraints such as guilt, shame and embarrassment.

Fortunately there are still communities smaller towns, usually where schools maintain discipline and where parents hold up standards that proclaim: "In" this family certain things are not tolerated they simply are not done!

Yet more and more, especially in our larger cities and suburbs, these inner restraints are loosening. Your typical robber has gone. He considers your property his property; he takes what he wants, including your life if you enrage him.

The main cause of this break-down is a radical shift in attitudes. Thirty years ago, if a crime was committed, society was considered the victim. Now, in a shocking reversal, it's the criminal who is considered victimized: by his underprivileged upbringing, by the school that didn' t teach him to read, by the church that failed to reach him with moral guidance, by the parents who didn't provide a stable home.

I don't believe it. Many others in equally disadvantaged circumstances choose not to engage in criminal activities. If we free the criminal, even partly, from accountability, we become a society of endless excuses where no one accepts responsibility for anything.

We in America desperately need more people who believe that the person who commits a crime is the one responsible for it.

What the wise man said suggests that______.

A.it' s unnecessary for good people to do anything in face of evil

B.it' s certain that evil will prevail if good men do nothing about it

C.it' s only natural for virtue to defeat evil

D.it's desirable for good men to keep away from evil
