For the past several decades, it seems there's been a general consensus on how to get ahead in America: Get a college education, find a reliable job, and buy your own home. But do Americans still believe in that path, and if they do, is it attainable? The most recent National Journal poll asked respondents about the American dream, what it takes to achieve their goals, and whether or not they felt a significant amount of control over their ability to be successful. Overwhelmingly, the results show that today, the idea of the American dream—and what it takes to achieve it—looks quite different than it did in the late 20th century. By and large, people felt that their actions and hard work—not outside forces—were the deciding factor in how their lives turned out. But respondents had decidedly mixed feelings about what actions make for a better life in the current economy. In the last seven years, Americans have grown more pessimistic about the power of education to lead to success. Even though they see going to college as a fairly achievable goal, a majority—52 percent—think that young people do not need a four-year college education in order to be successful. Miguel Maeda, 42, who has a master's degree and works in public health, was the first in his family to go to college, which has allowed him to achieve a sense of financial stability his parents and grandparents never did. While some, like Maeda, emphasized the value of the degree rather than the education itself, others still see college as a way to gain new perspectives and life experiences. Sixty-year-old Will Fendley, who had a successful career in the military and never earned a college degree, thinks "personal drive" is far more important than just going to college. To Fendley, a sense of drive and purpose, as well as an effective high-school education, and basic life skills, like balancing a checkbook, are the necessary ingredients for a successful life in America. 51.It used to be commonly acknowledged that to succeed in America, one had to have _____.
A.an advanced academic degree
B.an ambition to get ahead
C.a firm belief in their dream
D.a sense of drive and purpose
52.What is the finding of the latest National Journal poll concerning the American dream_____
A.More and more Americans are finding it hard to realize.
B.It remains alive among the majority of American people.
C.Americans' idea of it has changed over the past few decades.
D.An increasing number of young Americans are abandoning it.
53.What do Americans now think of the role of college education in achieving success_____
A.It still remains open to debate.
B.It has proved to be beyond doubt.
C.It is no longer as important as it used to be.
D.It is much better understood now than ever.
54.How do some people view college education these days_____
A.It promotes gender equality.
B.It needs to be strengthened.
C.It adds to cultural diversity.
D.It helps broaden their minds.
55.What is one factor essential to success in America, according to Will Fendley_____

D.A clear aim and high motivation.
In the past, concern about a man-made warming of the earth has concentrated on the Arctic because the Antarctic is much colder and has a much thicker ice sheet. But the weather experts are now paying more attention to West Antarctic, which may be affected by only a few degrees of warming, in other words, by a warming on the scale that will possibly take place in the next fifty years from the burning of fuels.
Satellite pictures show that large areas of Antarctic ice are already disappearing. The evidence available suggests that a warming has taken place. This fits the theory that carbon dioxide warms the earth.
However, most of the fuel is burnt in the northern hemisphere, where temperatures seem to be falling. As a result, scientists conclude that up to now natural influences on the weather have exceeded those caused by human being.
(30)
A.Releasing less and less carbon dioxide.
B.Continuing to burn fuels at the present rate.
C.Melting of ice caps in the poles.
D.The rising sea level several meters.
Number one is to have clear goals. Decide how many years you will invest for, and what your needs will be in the future.
Number two is to understand the range of possibilities. You'll want a diversified portfolio: one with a mix of stocks, mutual funds, bonds, and cash. It's a jungle out them. Each of these products has different risks associated with them and also different potential rewards. Understand them before you buy, so there won't be any big surprises later.
Finally, number three is to have realistic expectations. As our Mend Leonardo da Vinci said in the year 1500: "He who wishes to be rich in a day will be hanged in a year."
Over the past several years, New York stocks have averaged 30% annual returns, but don't count on this continuing. While it's true that since the year 1900, stocks have averaged an 11% annual return. It's a roller-coaster ride with many minus years as well, so you have to stay in for the long term--you have to weather the storm--and not be too greedy.
(30)
A.To develop a savings plan.
B.To set up a bank account.
C.To set clear investing goals.
D.To work out the budget.
M: Ah, it's a pleasure to be here.
W: Now, Dr. Adams. Tell us about the title of your book, Learning a Language over Eggs and Toast.
M: Well, one of the most important keys to learning another language is to establish a regular study program, like planning a few minutes every morning around breakfast time.
W: So what are some of the basic keys you are suggesting in the hook?
M: Well, as I just mentioned, people need to plan out their study by setting realistic and attainable goals from the beginning. And small steps, little by little, are the key.
W: Now you mentioned something about maximizing your learning potential by learning about your own individual learning styles. Can you elaborate on that?
M: Sure. People often have different ways of learning and approach learning tasks differently. Some people are visual learners who prefer to see models of the patterns they are expected to learn; others are auditory learners who favor hearing instructions, for example, over reading them.
W: Well, Dr. Adams. What is your learning style?
M: Well, I'm a very tactile learner.
W: You mean one who learns through hands-on experience?
M: Exactly.
W: Okay. We have just heard from Dr. Charles Adams, author of the book, Learning Languages over Eggs and Toast. Thanks for joining us.
M: My pleasure.
(23)
A.How to write a book on language learning.
B.How to learn languages well.
C.How to find out a language learner's learning style.
D.How to do research on language learning.
M: Thank you for that introduction.
W: Well, Dr. Miller, as a matter of fact, there are many issues facing aged people. Can you say something about those?
M: Well, first, I want to share a story of my own life. Several years ago when my grandparents were well into their eighties, they were faced with the reality of no longer being able to adequately care for them.
W: Yeah, that is quite a common and natural problem with aged people.
M: My grandfather spoke of his greatest fear, that of leaving the only home they had known for the past 60 years. The prospect of having to sell their home, giving up their independence and moving into a retirement home was an extremely depressing experience for them.
W: That's definitely sure.
M: He was quite sad, exclaiming that he felt he wasn't important anymore.
W: Yeah, that's a quite natural feeling.
M: For them and some older Americans, this period of their lives means the decline of not only one's health but the loss of identity and serf-worth. In many societies, this serf-identity is closely related with our social status, occupation, material possessions, or independence.
W: So is there any way to help the elderly reestablish their serf-identity?
M: Well, I think it is important to find some meaningful roles the elderly can and should play in our societies. By doing something for the society, they will feel they are still useful and important.
