听力原文: When you take a walk in any of the cities in the West, you often see a lot of people walking dogs. It is still true that a dog is the most useful and faithful animal in the world, but the reasons why people keep a dog have changed. In the old days people used to train dogs to protect themselves against attacks by other beasts. And later they came to realize that a dog was not only useful for protection but willing to obey his master. For example, when people used dogs for hunting, the dogs would not eat what was caught without permission. But now people in the city need not protect themselves against attacks of animals. Why do they keep dogs, then? Some people keep dogs to protect themselves from robbery. But the most important reason is for companionship. For a child, a dog is his best friend when he has no friends to play with. For young couples, a dog is their child when they have no children. For old couples, a dog is also their child when their real children have grown up. So the main reason why people keep dogs has changed from protection to friendship.

(33)

A.For protection against other animals.

B.For protection against other dogs.

C.Just for fun.

D.For the purpose of guarding the house.

听力原文: One of the main complaints of city residents, not surprisingly, is the lack of parking. This problem is partly caused by all the abandoned cars on the streets. It has been estimated by A to Z Towing, Inc., a nationwide tow-truck agency, that over one million cars are abandoned on the streets and alleyways of the nation's cities. Each year approximately a third of those cars are moved and destroyed. The rest of the cars which are not removed take up parking spaces and make neighborhoods look rundown.

A survey of twenty cities by A to Z reports that as much as 30 million dollars is spent annually to tow away and dismantle abandoned vehicles. One city alone, Los Angeles, spends five million dollars a year to control the accumulation of abandoned cars on its streets. Even though the city spends so much money on the program, it is always fighting a losing battle as more and more cars are constantly coming off the production line.

Boston, on the other hand, which spends most of its money on museums and libraries, does not appropriate tax money to clean abandoned cars off the streets. In Boston the problem has been dealt with by a non-profit governmental agency called Street Horizons, which uses the money from the recycling of the metal in the cars to pay for the cost of towing them The program in Boston sounds good although it has not completely reached financial independence from the federal government yet. Until a truly self-sufficient program for removing old cars is developed, it will remain a serious problem

(33)

A.Around four hundred thousand cars.

B.Thirty million old cars.

C.One million junked cars.

D.Five million cars altogether.

听力原文: Shop-lifters can be divided into three main categories: the professionals, the deliberate amateurs, and the people who just can't help themselves. The professionals do not pose much of a problem for the store detectives assisted by closed circuit television, two-way mirrors and various other technological devices. The professionals tend to go for high value goods in parts of the shops where security measures are the tightest. And, in any case, they account for only a small percentage of the total losses due to shoplifting.

The same applies to the deliberate amateurs who are, so to speak, professionals in training. Most of them get caught sooner or later, and they are dealt with severely by the courts.

The real problem is the person who gives way to a sudden temptation and is in all other respects an honest and law-abiding citizen. Contrary to what one would expect, this kind of shop-lifter is rarely poor. He does not steal because he needs the goods and cannot afford to pay for them. He steals because he simply cannot stop himself. And there are countless others who, because of age, sickness or plain absentmindedness, simply forget to pay for what they take from the shops. When caught, all are liable to prosecution, and the decision whether to send for the police or not is in the hands of the store manager.

In order to prevent the incredible growth in shop-lifting, some stores are doing their best to separate the thieves from the confused by prohibiting customers from taking bags into the store. However, what is most worrying about the problem is that it is yet another instance of the innocent majority being penalized and inconvenienced because of the actions of a small minority.

(30)

A.The professionals who go for high value goods cause great loss to the stores.

B.The deliberate amateurs do not pose much a problem for the stores.

C.Those who can't help themselves account for only a small percentage.

D.All of the shop-lifters will be dealt with severely by the courts.
