听力原文:W: So you really believe that clothes carry a kind of message for other people an
d that what we put on is in some way a reflection of what we feel?

M: Oh yes, very much so. People are beginning now to take seriously the idea of a kind of psychology of clothing, to believe that there is not just individual taste in our clothes but also a thinking behind what we wear, which is trying to express something we may not even be aware of ourselves.

W: But surely this has always been the case. We all dress up when we want to impress someone, such as for a job interview with a prospective employer.

M: True, but that's a conscious act. What I'm talking about is more of a subconscious thing. Take for example the student who is away from home: if he tends to wrap himself up more than the others, this is because he is probably feeling homesick. Simitarly, a general feeling of insecurity can sometimes take the form. of over-dressing in warmer clothes than are necessary.

W: Can you give any other examples of this kind?

M: Yes. I think people who are sociable and outgoing tend to prefer brighter or more dazzling colors -- yellows, bright reds, and so on. And aggressive clothes might indicate an aggressive personality or attitude to life.

W: Do you think the care -- or lack of it -- over the way we actually wear our clothes has anything to tell us?

M: Yes, indeed. The length, for example, of a man's trousers speaks volumes about his awareness of his own image. Or, if his trousers are hanging down, this probably means he's absorbed by other things.

W: Oh, very interesting. Tell me more about it.

M: OK ....

(23)

A.The colors of clothing.

B.The individual taste on clothing.

C.The idea of psychology of clothing.

D.The clothing fashion.

听力原文: Why must we pay taxes? The answer is that the government needs money for many things, for example to pay its soldiers, sailors and airmen, to build roads, bridges, offices, schools, etc; and only the people of the country can supply the money.

One of the most important taxes is income-tax which a person pays according to the amount of his income, whether he is a merchant, a doctor, a lawyer, a shopkeeper. This is called a "direct" tax, because it is paid in money direct to the government.

Another tax is paid on goods such as watches, new clothes, tobacco, wine, etc. When they are brought into a country, such a tax is paid as part of the price of these goods if they are later sold in shops. We call it "indirect" tax because it is paid indirectly through the shopkeeper.

People usually complain about having to pay taxes, but they forget that the money is spent on things that they and their families need. We need policemen to catch thieves, to see that men obey the laws, to direct traffic, etc., and they must be paid what they earn; children need education and there must be schools and teachers; we want our streets to be kept clean, and the wages of men who do this kind of work have to be paid.

Taxes, anyway, cannot be avoided. We buy our own food and clothes and pay for our own amusements; but there are several things that the State finds the money for, and that are necessary for us if our society is to continue. We have no real cause to complain, when we are asked to supply money to be spent for the good of ourselves and for our fellow citizens.

(30)

A.The tax that one pays to the companies instead of government.

B.The tax that one pays through the shopkeeper for the goods.

C.The tax is paid as part of the price of the goods.

D.The tax is not paid to the government.

听力原文: Yokoi Shoichi, a Japanese soldier during World War II, never surrendered. For tw
enty-seven years, he hid deep ill the jungles of Guam, a Pacific island battle site during the war. Shoichi stayed there, away from friends and foes alike, because he felt "shame and dishonor" after the war.

Shoichi knew that Japan had lost the war, but the humiliation of defeat kept him from surrendering. So he stayed in the jungle, living on what he could search out. He ate mostly insects, snails, frogs and rats.

In 1972, U.S. authorities finally convinced Shoichi to "surrender". He was sent back to his homeland. Shoichi's returning home attracted a lot of attention. When a department store in Tokyo exhibited his jungle clothes and tools, more than 350,000 curious people came to view them. After spending some time back in civilization, Shoichi met a forty-five years old widow. The old soldier and the widow fell in love and married. After their wedding, the couple took a honeymoon trip to the island of Guam.

(30)

B.The battles on Guam during World War II.

C.Yokoi Shoichi's marriage.

D.A Japanese soldier who hid on Guam.
