Questions:
52.Identify the writer and the work.
53.What does the phrase “inscrutable face” mean?
54.What idea does the quoted passage express?
There are many different ways to spend our free time. Almost everyone has some kind of __2__. It may be something from colleting stamps to making model planes. Some hobbies are very expensive, but others don't cost anything at all. Some collections are worth a lot of money, others are valuable only to their owners.
I know a man who has a coin collection worth several __3__ dollars. A short time ago he bought a rare fifty-cent piece which cost him $50! He was very happy about this collection and thought the price was all right. On the other hand, my youngest brother collects match boxes. He has almost 600 kinds of them, but I wonder __4__ they are worth any money. However, to my brother they are quite valuable. __5__ makes him happier than to find a new match box for his collection.
That's what a hobby means, I think. It is something we like to do in our free time just for the fun of it. The value in dollars is not important, but the pleasure it gives us is.

听力原文: Nowadays there are more and more ways of going on holiday. More and more people go abroad every year. Some people even go on two or three holidays a year.
In my opinion, there are two types of holidaymakers. The first kind of holidaymakers always flocks to seaside resorts when they go on holiday. Their one and only aim is to have a good time by sunbathing and putting their feet up. They are not a hit interested in local specialties. At mealtimes, if they can get a plate of British "fish and chips", they're more than happy! They spend their days in the sunshine and their evenings getting drunk, then sleep soundly. If this sort of person forgets to pack the suntan oil, he or she will Undoubtedly come home as red as a lobster.
The other sort of holidaymakers goes to every country to increase their knowledge of foreign lands. They make use of the chance to travel to improve their world knowledge. For them, going on holiday is educational. Consequently, this sort of travelers will move from place to place every few days. If they visit lots of places in a short span of time, there is no way that they can get a proper feel of a place or fully appreciate the local food and wine.
Whichever type of holiday chosen, everybody has the same aim: to put their work to the back of their minds, have as much fun as possible and come home happy and relaxed.

M: Really? That's too bad. Aren't you feeling well?
W: Oh, it' s not bad. There' s going to be a public meeting down at the town hall. The state sector from this area is going to be there. She has this meeting three or four times a year to speak with people.
M: Is that what you like to do with your evenings, go to listen to a politician's speech?
W: Actually, it's a class assignment. Professor Jackson, he's teaching that political science seminar I am taking. He told all of us in the seminar to go and hear what the senator has to say tonight and also write up a report about the issues people bring up.
M: Oh, like medical care, and tax and... ?
W: Right, as long as I'm there, I think I'd like to bring up government funding for state universities. The tuition keeps going up and it's getting harder and harder for a lot of students to afford it.
M: It is nothing new. Everybody knows about it.
W: Anyway, I want to do a really good job on this report. I need to get a letter of recommendation from Professor Jackson for a graduate school. So I guess I'd better show up there tonight and see what's going on.
M: Yeah, but, what about the history test?
W: Well, I already put in some time on that this morning. So I think by tomorrow afternoon, I'll be ready.

His wife Jane, an Oxford graduate in modern languages, has a demanding full-time job. She is director of the Cambridge House literacy scheme for adults in South London. Her working week involves several evenings and Saturdays, and at these times her husband is in sole charge of home and family. Apart from this, they share household jobs and employ a child-minder for the afternoons. This enables him to teach two days a week and to do what he considers his principal work—writing. He has written several books and spends much of his time in the British Museum Reading Room, cycling there from his home in Brixton. People ask the Maces if they think that their children miss them. One can argue that satisfied parents generally have satisfied children, but in any case the Maces are careful to reserve time and energy to play with their children. "And they have now developed relationships with other adults and children."
Previously, Rodney Mace worked full-time and Jane only part-time. Then 18 months ago, the director of file literacy scheme left. "It seemed to me that Jane was very well suited to do this ]ob. She was very doubtful about it. But I urged her to apply. She did, and she got it." Jane Mace confirms that she needed this encouragement, as so many women initially do. Did his male self-esteem suffer from the change-over? Nothing like that occurred. But he still seems amazed at the way it changed his thinking. "I felt that we were finally going to be partners. I felt enormous relief. I wasn't avoiding responsibility, but changing it. Our relationship is so much better now. It has been a change for the good for both of us — I think for all of us, in every aspect of our lives, I cannot overemphasize that: in every aspect, 1 think it is fundamental that the woman works. The idea of equal partnership is just a fancy if one partner doesn't work."
The article is about a couple whose married life is happier because ______.
A.they have a truly equal partnership
B.the husband has more sense of household responsibility
C.the couple cares little about other people's comment on their life
D.the wife has a full time job

听力原文:W: Hi, Mark! How's it going?
M: Well, not so great.
W: What's wrong?
M: I've got a big problem with file poetry course that's required for my major.
W: Is it all filled up?
M: No, no. There's plenty of room, but there's prerequisite (前提条件). I've got to take Introduction to Poetry before I can take the special course in poets of the 1960's. And the introduction course is only offered in the evenings.
W: You don't like evening classing?
M: No, that's not the point. I work in the cafeteria every evening. I need the money to pay my tuition.
W: Can't you ask someone at work to switch hours with you? Maybe you could just switch a couple of evenings, since the course probably only meets two times a week.
M: I wish I could. My boss just did me a favor by putting me on evenings. And he'll hit the ceiling if I ask to change again.
W: Wait a minute. I have an idea. Have you checked the courses over at the community college? They might offer an Introduction to Poetry during the day.
M: That's a great idea. I'm free this afternoon. I think I'll go over and check it out.
W: Yeah, their courses are actually a lot cheaper, and you can transfer the credits over here.
M: Thanks for the advice, Linda. I'll let you know what happens.
W: Sure, Mark. Good luck,

听力原文: When friends come to visit us in the evening, they spend their time telling us that they are in a hurry and looking at their watches. It isn't that our friends are all busy, it is just that we haven't got a television. People think that we are very strange. "But what do you do in the evenings?" they are always asking. The answer is simple. Both my wife and I have hobbies. We certainly don't spend our evenings staring at the walls. My wife enjoys cooking and painting and often attends evening classes in foreign language. This is particularly useful as we always go abroad for our holidays. I collect stamps and am always busy with my collection. Both of us enjoy listening to music and playing chess(象棋)together.
Sometimes there are power cuts and we have no electricity in the house. This does not worry us as we just light candles and carry on with what we were doing before. Our friends are lost--no television! --so they don't know what to do. On such evenings our house is very full as they all come to us. They all have a good time. Instead of sitting in silence in front of the television, everybody talks and plays games. Yes, life is possible without television!

Since there are only a few small kitchens in the dorms, most students buy meal contracts which are total in twenty meals per week to get cafeterias. It would be an exception of Sundays evenings in vacation breaks. Dining-halls like Brummie are open everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner, students simply present their meal tickets at the door and go to the line helping themselves to eat much food they wanted. While dietitians work hard to offer students nutrition at well: balanced diet, many of our young men and women claimed that Brummie's food like most dorm food leaves much to be desired. However, there are certain times, especially around Thanksgiving and Christmas, when the dining-halls staff goes all out preparing seasonal specialties together with steak or sea-food. These dinners are always exceptional and well attended. But regardless of the supplies of cooking, Brummie is a good place to get together with friends and to meet new people. And this is the students centre which is coming up on our right.
