听力原文:M: Hello, you must be Lisa? Please come in, I am Harry Smith from Harvard.

W: Hi, Dr. Smith, I am Lisa. Dr. Watts recommended me to come here.

M: It is a pleasure to be able to finally meet you! Dr. Watts has been telling me so many good things about you.

W: That's very flattering. But I am not sure that I deserve all of that praise!

M: Yes, of course you do! I have learned so much about you. It's so fresh to see a student who is so modest about her accomplishments. Now would you mind my telling you what type of help I will need with my project.

W: Sure.

M: I am basically looking for someone who can gather information regarding cultures which exist along the Amazon River.

W: Really? What a coincidence! That's the topic for my senior paper!

M: That's fabulous! Would you be available to do around 16- 20 hours of research each week? I'm currently on vacation, so I'll be staying in Southern California the next three months. Perhaps we could meet each week to review your findings.

W: That's great! I will be very happy to work with you.

M: Good, if you decide to take this short-term job, the university has agreed to provide 4 credit hours for your work in this position.

听力原文:M: How was your weekend?

W: It was awful.

M: Awful? Really? But I thought you planed to be going on a trip. Did you cancel it?

W: No. Unfortunately. I would have been better off if we had canceled it.

M: What do you mean?

W: Well, five of us were supposed to go to Chicago in Lisa's car...

M: Yeah?

W: And we were going to stay at Sue's parents' house, which is in Chicago...

M: Right?

W: So it's about a four-hour trip, and we were going to get there on Friday evening, and spend Saturday sight-seeing, and come back last night so we could go to classes this morning.

M: OK. That sounds like a good plan. So what went wrong?

W: What didn't go wrong? First of all, we were all crammed into Lisa's tiny car with all our bags.

M: Sounds pretty uncomfortable.

W: Hold on. I'm just getting started. Remember how hot it was this weekend?

M: Yeah, it was so bad I had to get out of the library. I ended up going to the beach both days.

W: Well, we were stuck in Lisa's car Friday afternoon and the air conditioing wasn't working.

M: Why didn't you open the windows?

W: We did, but the breezes blowing in were also hot.

M: I think you were glad to get to Chicago.

W: That's the worst part. We never made it. The car broke down and we were waiting for the car to be repaired the whole of Saturday in some small town near the Indiana border.

听力原文:M:How are your new neighbors, Nancy?

W:They seem nice enough, but they have a son who's driving me crazy

M: What do you mean?

W: He comes home every night around 10 with his car windows rolled down and his radio blaring. It stops as soon as he turns the car off. But by then Brian and Lisa are wide awake.

M: Oh, no.

W: Oh, yes. Sometimes it takes us till midnight just to get them to settle down again.

M: Have you tried talking to them?

W: We haven't even really met them yet except to say a quick hallo. I hate to get off on the wrong foot.

M: You are not going to like them when you do meet them if you keep on simmering.

W: I know, but I feel stupid complaining. It's not as though he's blasting his stereo all night.

M: You said yourself it is driving you crazy.

W: Well, You know how early I have to get up to be here at the office, I'm just not getting enough sleep and neither are the kids. They're so irritable when I get home in the afternoon.

M: Maybe you could go over there sometime with a little gift: a plant for the yard or something. Then you could ask their son whether they have any other children and they'll be sure to ask about yours.

W: Yeah, and then what?

M: Then you could mention that the hardest thing at this stage is getting your kids to go to sleep at night.

W: And keeping them in the asleep.

M: That's the idea. And you should do it soon. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to do politely.

(20)

听力原文:W: Hi, Peter. Nice to meet you!

M: Hi. You are?

W: I'm Lisa, [22] a good friend of your young sister Alice. I used to go to your home when you were still home.

M: Yeah, Lisa, I remember, the active girl usually in red. Nice to meet you, too.

W: [22] Alice told me I might meet you here, but I didn't expect it so soon.

M: When did you come here?

W: A couple of days ago. Today I just had my first class.

M: How was your first class?

W: Well, I got lost and I was late as the class was moved to another building.

M: Don't worry about it.[25] It was a freshman class, so I'm sure you weren't the only person who was late. The first day is just going over the syllabus and finding out what will be expected of the students. Still, if you don't want to sit in the front, [23] you'd better go there early to find a seat since the classroom usually fills up.

W: Thank you for telling me. Where are you going?

M: I have an appointment with my advisor. I've been behind in my research for the fellowship, and [24] I am supposed to have an outline ready by today!

W: Oh! What are you going to do?

M: [24] I'll come up with a short outline after biology class and promised him a complete outline early next week. That reminds me. I've got to run. See you later !

W: Ok. Good luck!

M: Ah, yes, I'll call you later when I'm free. What's your phone number?

W: 8887777, easy to remember. Hurry up! Bye!

听力原文:M: One of the most common questions we ask about people's behavior. is "why". Why
did she say this?" Why did he do that? Sometimes the reason is obvious, for example, someone is driving down the street, the light turns red, they stop, why?

W: Because they have to, legally I mean.

M: Exactly! In this case the reason is obvious, so we usually don't question it. But when the reason is not so obvious and especially when the behavior. could have negative consequences we'll more likely to feel a need to explain the causes of the behavior. Social psychologists have a term for this, for the process of explaining the causes of the behavior, it's called "causal attribution". And one theory suggests, there's a pattern in the way we go about attributing causes to people's behavior. According to this theory, there are two categories of reasons: internal factors and external factors. Again, Lisa, say you're driving down the road and all of a sudden some guy turns into the lane right in front of you, and you have to slam on your brakes to avoid an accident. How do you react?

W: I'll probably get very angry.

M: Because...

W: Well, he's not paying attention, he's a bad driver.

M: So you automatically attribute the driver's behavior. to an internal factor. He himself is to blame because he is careless.

W: So if I said it was because of heavy traffic or something, I'd be attributing his behavior. to an external factor, something beyond his control.

M: Good. Now how do we usually explain our own negative behavior?

W: We blame external factors.

M: That's right.

(23)

A.Common causes of anger.

B.Judging people's behavior.

C.Changing people's attitudes.

D.The effects of negative behavior.
