听力原文:M: So, Rebecca, what did you do for spring break?

W: I went to southern California. I was in Los Angeles and San Diego. Oh, and I stopped in San Juan Capistrano. That's south of Los Angeles and north of San Diego. I happened to be there just about the time the swallows returned.

M: Oh, I've heard about that they always return on the same day, don't they?

W: That's right, on March 19th. And they always fly away on the same day, October 23rd. In the meantime, they migrate over 7,000 miles to get to their winter homes.

M: Seven thousand miles, imagine! And always coming back on the same day!

W: Yes, except for one year, a long time ago, they were delayed for a day by a storm at sea.

M: So, what's the town of San Juan Capistrano like?

W: Oh, it's a pleasant little town. Once there was a famous mission church there.

M: Once? What happened to it?

W: It was destroyed by an earthquake almost two hundred years ago. But there is an old adobe church that survived. The swallows build their nests in the walls and towers of that church.

M: You sure were lucky to be there on the one day of the year when the swallows return.

W: Well, I wasn't there exactly on that day. I got to town a couple of days later, but I did see the parade celebrating the swallows return.

M: They have a parade? The people there must really like those swallows.

W: Sure, they bring lots of tourists to town, and besides, the swallows eat insects, including mosquitoes!

听力原文: A couple of months ago, I went to a department store to buy a few things for the house. I needed a set of curtains for the living room, two table lamps, a rug and several cushions. I asked them to deliver the things as soon as possible, but they said they were unable to send them out until 20 days later. After about 3 weeks, I received only the curtains and table lamps. I was a little disappointed when I didn't receive all the items I had bought. But nevertheless, I was eager to see what the curtains and lamps looked like. I first opened the package with the curtains. I had bought a lovely light blue, and instead they had sent me a horrible dark purple. Well, you can just imagine how angry I was. Then I opened the boxes with the lamps. They were exactly what I'd ordered. But one of the lampshades was damaged. The next I did was to telephone them to complain. They promised to come and pick them up immediately and also to replace them with the correct order. It has been two weeks since my complaint. They have neither picked up the wrong items nor sent me the rest of my order.

When a department store in Tokyo exhibited his jungle clothes and tools, more than 350,000 curious people came to view them. After spending some time back in civilization, Shoichi met a forty-five years old widow. The old soldier and the widow fell in love and married. After their wedding, the couple took a honeymoon trip to the island of Guam.

听力原文: Wilma Rudolph was called "the Black Pearl "and "the fastest woman in tile world"
. In 1960 ,Wilma Rudolph became the first American woman to win three gold medals in one Olympics. She was an extraordinary American athlete.

Wilma Rudolph was born in 1940, in Saint Bethlehem, Tennessee. She was born too early and only weighed two kilograms. Her left leg was damaged because of illnesses. When she was six years old, she began to wear metal leg braces because she could not use that leg. Since she was sick most of the time, her brothers and sisters all helped to take care of her. Soon, her family's attention and care showed results. By the time she was nine years old, she no longer needed her leg braces.

Wilma Rudolph went to her first Olympic Games when she was sixteen years old and still in high school. She competed in the nineteen fifty-six games in Melbourne, Australia. She was the youngest member of the United States team. She won a bronze medal, in the sprint relay event.

In 1960, Wilma Rudolph went to the Olympics again, this time in Rome, Italy. She won two gold medals—first place—in the one hundred meter and the two hundred meter races. She set a new Olympic record of twenty-three point two seconds for the two hundred meter dash.

Her team also won the gold medal in the four hundred meter sprint relay event, setting a world record of forty-four point five seconds. These three gold medals made her one of the most popular athletes at the Rome games. These victories made people call her the "world's fastest woman".
