听力原文:M: Are traveling facilities good in the rest of Britain?

W: Well, we've got the railways that connect all our big towns. There're over 13,000 miles of track in Britain. Rail transport provides a very important service to the public, to industry and commerce.

M: What about road transport? Are your roads good?

W: Yes, they are on the whole. We've got about a quarter of a million miles of roads, and multi-motorways are appearing everywhere. We should have over one thousand miles of motorways soon.

M: Is there a good internal air service in Britain?

W: Well, yes. But it is not as important as our rail and road transport systems.

M: But British air services, the BEA and the BOAC, are world famous, aren't they?

W: Oh yes, our international air services are very good. London Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world.

M: What about travel by sea?

W: As an island people and a trading nation, Britain's seafaring traditions have always been great. We used to have the biggest merchant navy in the world, carrying a third of the world's passengers, you know.

M: But I suppose today sea travel has diminished in importance, hasn't it?

W: It has. But some people still prefer traveling by sea to any other forms of transport.

听力原文:W: Excuse me, would you mind answering a few questions?

M: Well, I don't know. I am in rather a hurry actually.

W: It won't take a moment. We're doing a public opinion poll on some important political questions to try to find out if the Government really has support for its policies. The results are going to be published in a national newspaper.

M: Oh, all right, then.

W: Thanks. Well, I'll read out statements and you have to say whether you agree strongly, agree, disagree, disagree strongly or just don't know. OK?

M: Yes.

W: Well, first of all, "Policemen should always carry guns. " Do you agree?

M: No, not always.

W: What is your opinion?

M: They shouldn't do that when they're on normal duty. But if they're chasing a criminal who they know has got a gun, then they should be armed as well.

W: OK, next question. "Britain should drive on the right-hand side of the road. "

M: What rubbish! Why doesn't everybody else drive on the left?

W: All right. One more question: "Britain should leave the EEC. "

M: That's nasty. I wasn't in favor of us joining, but I think it would be difficult to leave now. I think we'll just have to stay in and make the best of it.

W: OK, that's all. Thank you very much.

听力原文:M: (19)You know I've been thinking about applying for a job in Germany. Well, I've got the details about different jobs and I'd like your opinion about which would be the best one to go for.

W: Where are the jobs?

M: (20)One's in Munich, one's in Frankfurt and the other one's in Hamburg.

W: Munich's supposed to be a very nice place.

M: Yes, it is, and it's also in a beautiful part of Germany, not far from the Alps.

W: That would be great for the kids they'd love to be able to go skiing at weekends.

M: But, one problem with Munich is that it's growing very fast. That means the cost of living will probably be very high.

W: (21)How is the salary of the job in Munich compared with the other jobs?

M: It's higher than the salary of the job in Frankfurt but lower than the one in Hamburg. The Hamburg job has the most responsibility. From the point of view of career progression that would probably be the best job for me.

W: Hamburg's the closest to Britain, too, so it would be easy to come back for long weekends and holidays.

M: That's right, and there's a regular ferry service which would save quite a bit on fares.

W: What about the cost of living in Germany as a whole? How is it compared with British?

M: Well, It's definitely higher than over here, but salaries are substantially higher, so we'd certainly be better off than we are now.

听力原文:M: Good morning, Percy.

W: Trevor, you have one of the most unusual stories I've ever heard. Yet, nowadays, you seem to lead a very ordinary life.

M: Yes, Percy. I’m a dentist. I live and work in London.

W: But at one time you used to have a different job?

M: Yes, I was a soldier.

W: A soldier?

M: That's right.

W: And how long ago was that?

M: Oh, about two thousand years ago.

W: That's right. Trevor Cartridge believes that he was a soldier in the army of Julius Caesar. He remembers coming to Britain with the Roman army two thousand years ago. Trevor, tell us your remarkable story ... in your own words!

M: Well, funnily enough, it all began because I wanted to give up smoking.

W: Give up smoking?

M: Mm, I used to smoke too much and I tried to give up several times, but I always started smoking again a few days later. In the end I went to a hypnotist. He hypnotized me, and I stopped smoking at once I was delighted, as you can imagine.

W: Yes.:

M: That made me very interested in hypnotism, and I talked to the hypnotist about it. He told me that some people could remember their past lives when they were hypnotized, and he asked if I wanted to try. I didn't believe it at first, but in the end I agreed. He hypnotized me, mid sure enough I was a Roman soldier in Caesar's army.

听力原文:W: You're the editor of Public Eye. What kind of topics does your program cover?

M: Well, there are essentially domestic stories. We don't cover international stories. We don't cover party politics or economics. We do issues of general social concern to our British audience. They can be anything from the future of the health service to the way the environment is going downhill.

W: How do you choose the topic? Do you choose one because it's what the public wants to know about or because it's what you feel the public ought to know about?

M: I think it's a mixture of both. Sometimes you have a strong feeling that something is important and you want to see it examined and you want to contribute to a public debate. Sometimes people come to you with things they are worried about and they can be quite small things. They can be a story about corruption in local government, something they cannot quite understand, why it doesn't seem to be working out properly, like they are not having their litter collected properly or the dustbins emptied.

W: How do you know that you've got a really successful program? One that is just right for the time?

M: I think you get a sense about it after working in it in a number of years. You know which stories are going to get the attention. They are going to be published just the point when the public are concerned about that.

Questions:

What kind of topics does Public Eye cover?

How does Public Eye choose its topics?

What factor plays an important role in running a successful program?

(20)

A.Current trends in economic development.

B.Domestic issues of general social concern.

C.Stories about Britain's relations with other nations.

D.Conflicts and compromises among political parties.
