ive writing course.

W: I haven't quite finished mine yet. [20] I had trouble getting past the beginning.

M: How come?

W: Well, I was really happy to be writing a detective story. [20] But after the first few pages, I sort of froze up mentally. I just couldn't write any more.

M: The same thing happened to me. I thought it meant I lack imagination.

W: Well, Prof. Wilson said it's pretty common for writers to get stuck like that.

M: You went to talk to her about it?

W: Actually, I went to ask for more time to finish the assignment. But instead she gave me some advice about how to keep from getting stalled writing like that. [21] She said that the first thing I should do is just write anything that come into my head even if it doesn't make any sense, sort of warm up exercise.

M: That's interesting. When I get stuck, I shift to something else, you know, do some work for one of my other courses.

W: Well, her methods seem to have worked for me. I've written most of the story, and I should be able to hand it in on time. But first I need go to the jewelry store.

M: You are going shopping? Can't you wait until you finish your story?

W: [22] I am going there for my story. My detective solves a jewelry store robbery. So I want to take a look at how the jewelry cases are arranged, where the security cameras are located, that sort of thing.

iment?

W: I can't. In fact I need to finish early because I'm going over to the psychology department to talk to Professor Smith about a job opening.

M: You mean a job on campus.

W: Yeah. And it sounds pretty interesting. It involves study and learning styles. You know, about how some people learn best by sight while others learn best by hearing or touch.

M: Yeah. I know that's an area of expertise.

W: Right. Anyway, for her study she's taking some high school students who aren't doing very well in their classes and testing them to find out what their learning styles are. Then tutors, people like me, will work with them presenting material to them in their particular learning style.

M: Hey. That is interesting. Now will you mostly do the testing or the tutoring?

W: Both I hope. I want to be involved from start to finish.

M: Are you getting paid for this?

W: I'm sure we'll get something, though, probably not much. Anyway, it doesn't matter to me. I just want to have some hand-on experience.

M: Yeah. And it'll be nice to help those high school students, too.

W: That's what I thought when I saw the ad. You know you could do it, too. You don't have to be in her classes to work on the study.

M: Really? Do you have any idea what the schedule is like?

W: Late afternoon then evening for tutoring I think. After all the kids are in regular classes until three thirty.

M: Actually that's perfect for me.

W: Then come along. We will save the lab report for later. But we'd better make sure we do a good job on our experiment first.

M: Yeah. First thing's first.

W: Hey, what are you doing here? I didn't expect you until later.

M: Well, I've already finished everything I had to do at work, so I thought I'd come back and help you. I know you've had a busy day.

W: I've had an extremely busy day, and it hasn't finished yet. Did you remember we've got Paul and Hannah for dinner tonight?

M: Yes, I did. Have you got everything you need?

W: Well, I've already done the shopping, but I haven't bought the wine yet.

M: Oh, I'll do that. Have you picked up the children yet?

W: No, I haven't done that yet. They're still at school.

M: OK, well, I'll get them when I buy the wine.

W: No, they've got their sports club, so they'll be there until about six. You're more important here. Have you collected the car from the garage yet? It should be ready by now.

M: No, I haven't. I'll go to the garage later. Now, what next?

W: Well, the kitchen is clean, but you could check the bathroom for me.

M: OK. Have you thrown away the pile of newspapers in the front room?

W: No, they're still lying on the table.

M: I'll take out the rubbish as well.

W: I've already done that. Now, I haven't started cooking yet, and it's getting late. When you've got the wine, can you lay the table? Here's the table cloth and knives and forks. And mend the television? It still doesn't work. Oh, and wrap up your mother's birthday present. It still needs wrapping paper. And turn on the heating. It's getting quite cold in here.
