Have you seen films in which a train crashed or a ship sank into the ocean? ff so, you may have wondered how these things could happen without harming the people in the film. The man who knows the answer is the special effects man. He has one of the most important jobs in the film industry. He may be ordered to create a flood, or to make a battlefield explode. But he may also be asked to create a special effect. It is much more exciting. Once a film director wanted some fish that were swimming in a big glass bowl to stop swimming suddenly while they were seen to stare at an actor. Then the director wanted, the fish to stop staring and swim away. But fish can't be ordered to do anything. It was quite a problem. The special effects man thought about this for a long time. The result was an ides for controlling the fish with the harmless use of electricity. First he applied electricity to the fish howl causing the fish to be absolutely still. Then he rapidly reduced the amount of electricity allowing the fish to swim away. Thus he got the humorous effect that the director wanted.

听力原文: Watching movies is a good way to improve your listening: I would stress the usefulness of repetition. So watch a DVD of an English-language film with Chinese subtitles. Then,a week or so later, watch the film again with the subtitles covered up.This time, you will know broadly what the characters are trying to say, which will help your brain link the English words with their meanings.Of course, you can pause and rewind the film if there are certain bits that really puzzle you.
The next step would be to find a way to listen to the soundtrack of the film without watching it.You should know the scenes and the story well by now,so by removing the pictures your brain will really focus on the language spoken.
Before you do any of this, think carefully about what film you want to use to practice your listening. If you want to learn American English,be sure to watch a film set in the USA.If you choose a really well-regarded film, one that has won lots of Academy Awards, for example, you will probably be able to buy the screenplay of the film, which will be very useful to you.
Lastly, choose a film that you are not going to get tired of if you watch it three times!
This is a very satisfying way to practice your listening. You will really feel that you are improving.
What message does the speaker try to convey in this passage?
A.One can improve listening by watching movies.
B.Everybody wants to improve listening nowadays.
C.There is a good way to memorize vocabularies.
D.One needs to work hard to improve English.

The early film makers found Hollywood a suitable place for their work because of its clear, sunny, rain free weather, which allowed pictures to be taken all the year round. Also, it was known that every kind of scene needed for films, whether town, country, sea, desert or snow-capped mountains, could be found within the area of California. Nowadays, when some films can be "shot" under cover by man-made lighting, these advantages are not so important.
At present, Hollywood remains a center of film production although nowadays making more films for television than for the cinema. There, or in Beverly Hills nearby, are to be seen the houses of the "stars" and producers famous all over the world.
