听力原文: Americans like to laugh and make jokes, especially practical jokes. These jokes, intended to trick or deceive people in some harmless way, and are always popular. In the United States and a few other countries the first day of April, April Fool's Day, is a day devoted to such harmless practical jokes and an excuse for every American to fool his friends and neighbors.

When I was a college student, our daily college newspaper, which was read by most of the people who lived in the city near the college as well as by students, always had a special April Fool's Edition. One year the paper said that a beautiful park in the center of the campus was to be turned into a parking lot.

Another year the paper falsely reported that a Russian submarine had been seen in the lake which is on the campus. It was surprising that many people believed these stories. But probably the most successful practical being invaded by people from Mars. His description of this invasion from outer space was so realistic that he caused a panic and was actualy responsible for the deaths of several people.

听力原文: Americans love pets. Many pet owners treat their furry friends as part of the family. If they have an eye for fashion, pet owners can dress their pets in stylish clothes. For special occasions, they can use perfume to make their dogs smell well. You might say Americans treat their pets like they treat their children—sometimes even better. In America, there are more households with pets than those with children. At least 43 percent of U. S. homes have pets of some sort. Exotic creatures, such as monkeys, snakes and even wolves, find a home with some Americans. More common pets include tropical fish, mice and birds. But the all time favorites are cats and dogs, even at the White House. The Bushes’ dog, Spot, has replaced the Clintons’ cat, Socks. Leading a dog’s life in America isn’t such a bad thing. Many grocery stores sell delicious pet foods to owners eager to please their pets. In Houston, Texas, dogs can have their dinner delivered to their homes, just like pizza. Pets can even accompany their owners on vacation. Fancy hotels are beginning to accommodate both man and pets. Furry guests in hotels can enjoy delicious meals served on fine china and sleep in soft beds. The average American enjoys having pets around, and for good reasons. Researchers have discovered that interacting with animals lowers a person’s blood pressure. Dogs can offer protection from burglars and unwelcome visitors. Cats can help the home get rid of pests. Little creatures of all shapes and sizes can provide companionship and love. In many cases, having a pet prepares 32 a young couple for the responsibilities of parenthood. Pets even encourage social relationships: They give their owners an appearance of friendliness, and they provide a good topic of conversation.

(33)

B.Pets can offer protection for owners.

C.Pets can encourage social relationships.

听力原文: Cars are an important part of life in the United States. (29) Without a car most people feel that they are poor. And even if a person is poor he doesn't feel really poor when he has a car. The car made the United States a nation on wheels. And it helped make the United States what it is today. There are three reasons the car became so popular in the United States. First of all the country is a huge one and Americans like to move around in it. The car provides the most comfortable and cheapest form. of transportation. With a car people can go any place without spending a lot of money. The second reason that cars are popular is the fact that the United States never really developed an efficient and inexpensive form. of public transportation. Long-distance trains have never been as common in the United States as they are in other parts of the world. Nowadays there is a good system of air-service provided by planes. But it is too expensive to be used frequently. (30) The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence is what really made cars popular. Americans don't like to wait for a bus, or a train or even a plane. They don't like to have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. And this is the freedom that Americans want most to have. (31) The gas shortage has caused a big problem for Americans. But the answer will not be a bigger system of public transportation. The real solution will have to be a new kind of car, which does not use so much gas.

(30)

A.When they don't have a car.

B.When they live in a huge country.

C.When they don't use planes.

D.when they have a car.

听力原文: The Americans believe that anybody can become President of the United States. In a recent Hollywood comedy, that is exactly what happens.

Dave Kovic, played by Kevin Kline, is a kind-hearted man who runs a business that finds people jobs. He leads a typical American way of life, except for one thing — he looks exactly like the President, Bill Mitchell. In fact, the only thing that makes him different from the nation's leader is that he is very nice!

The president has started using look-alikes during some public appearances. Dave is offered a chance to "serve his country" by becoming one. However, things go wrong. The President becomes very ill and Dave ends up acting as the President forever.

Director Ivan Reitman, who made the popular and successful comedies like Twins, Ghostbusters and Legal Eagles, could have gone for easy laughs by making fun of the American government. Instead, Dave is an attractive comedy about an ordinary man in extraordinary situations. Kevin Kline gives a double performance as Dave and the President, and Sigourney Weaver is at her best as his First Lady. The love story that develops between her role and Dave is a real classic.

The film is 100% American. However, if you've ever felt that anybody could do a better job running the country than the people in power, then you'll enjoy Dave!

Questions 29 to 31 are based on the passage you have just heard.

29. What is the purpose of the passage?

30. Who plays the role of the President in the film?

31. What can be inferred from the passage?

(30)

A.To make a comparison between Dave and other films.

B.To discuss the Americans' ideas about the President.

C.To tell readers about the American government.

D.To introduce a new film to the reader.

听力原文: Is there such a thing as a typical American film? There are many features that mark a movie as American, but perhaps the most essential is the theme of the loner hero. From the earliest days of silent films until the recent science movies, the American movie has concentrated on the role of one individual who spends his or her life combating the forces of evil — and the good guy, the hero, usually wins.

In the western movie, which comes out of many legends of the American West, a typical figure is the lonesome cowboy. He wanders into a town and straightens out its troubles. Then the strong and independent hero rides off into the sunset alone. Americans like this image in their films because they are highly independent, and individualism counts a great deal with them.

Even the gangster movie, a very popular form. of the typical American film, usually has a hero, either he is a lawman out to catch the criminals or a gangster who suddenly sees the light and tries to go straight.

Recent science fiction films deal with the same themes. Against the forces of alien powers, people will fight to protect their ideals. Here, too, the action centers around a single individual, but now he or she must save the world.

(30)

A.Musical films.

B.The Western movie.

C.Science fiction films.

D.The gangster movie.
